I was just reacting to what you were saying Ken... Just how many places tougher than Mision Santa Maria do you need to go to? The Jeep is no good if
it breaks, right? I am surprised Neal let's you keep it! LOL
Have fun Ken... You know I love Jeeps (for their historic contributions to four wheeling... they started it)! I owned a Jeep, my dad owned Jeeps... We
first traveled to Baja in a Jeep!

Hey Slim, that web address is goofy. There is no .jpg and an @ is for email address.
Try right click on the image and highlight and copy the address in the properties box.
DON\'T SQUINT! Give yer eyes a break!
Try holding down [control] key and toggle the [+ and -] keys

When you need to air up a tire?

Just bring some lighter fluid, works great. Gas if your really in a bind. |
I like to drive with my tire pressure at around 11 p.s.i. This makes the Viair good to have on board.

Here's a few places I like to take my Daily Driver/Fun Baja Runner...
Rosarito Beach -- I ran portions of this obstacle course. If I had a pickup, I'd see myself bobbing the bed and I wouldn't get much utility from the
longer wheelbase vehicle

So, the Jeep is just to do silly but fun stuff in a closed course, once a year or so... kind of like off road racing?
A 4WD truck or SUV is to GET SOMEWHERE, have fun, over and over again...
It's okay if the racer (or rock climber) breaks, because it was just for some short time fun event. When it breaks, you just load onto your trailer
behind your TRUCK, and tow it home!
I am alarmed only when you say you can't do the next fun Baja trip because you broke something on your last Baja trip... You need a reliable vehicle
to take you anywhere in Baja, when you want to go!
We are counting on you to go to Baja (and take photos) Ken! FEED THE NOMADS!
Merry Christmas Ken!

If I wanted to, I could load up my Jeep and drive to Cabo and back. The rear disc brakes need servicing, but I could get that done in La Paz.
Otherwise, the Jeep is fit and ready to drive.
Its just the bumper that poses the biggest risk. Not to me, but to other drivers following from behind.
I'm getting the bumper repaired Friday morning, and next it will be the rear disc brakes (100,000 miles on ORIGINAL PARTS), and a visit to Home Depot
for the airtank parts.
As far as a Baja vehicle, I would prefer a DISCOUNT PRICED Unlimited Rubicon with Dana 44s, 4:1 RocTrac Transfer case, ELECTRIC LOCKERS
FRONT&REAR, selectable front SWAYBAR DISCONNECT, and a MODULAR removable hard top along with a STRAIGHT FRONT AXLE for roughly $30,000.00
How much TOYOTA TACOMA would $30,000.00 buy???
No breakdowns, and my 100,000 mile '03 1/2 is still going strong, and yes, I PLAY WITH IT ON ROCKS.

This old '66 beauty had a name and it was Betsy. Along with that side door Cabover Camper we traveled up and down Baja when I was in my early 20's. I
replaced the camper with a small Class A Motorhome and the truck with a newer Chevy Crew Cab

Next up was an '87 Chevy Crew Cab one ton. This damn thing went through two transmissions in under 50,000 Miles. I owned it for about 5 years. This
photo was taken a Rancho Percebu below San Felipe around '88

This was a really good truck, it did well on the rough road to La Bocana de Santo Tomas when I built a house out there in the early '90's.

Most recent Baja rig is my new/used '06 Super Duty Lariat Diesel 350. Great truck and it's used to Baja already and tows a mean load. Haven't named it
yet, maybe BadBoy1...

David, that's an interesting picture. Joe and Sandra went on Baja Grande this year, and with their stock 4WD Tacoma pickup were afraid to take it
along this stretch of 4WD trail. They have a pop up camper in the bed, and wimpy 28 or 29" street-biased tires and no suspension lift. With the
modifications you made on your Tacoma, was it also lifted to run those 32" tires you have? Under Joes Tacoma, it looked like ABSOLUTELY no additional
tire upgrades could be made unless there was a suspension lift, and I thought HOW WIMPY.

Ken, you know better than that!
NO MODS... It had factory suspension, factory size tires (265/70-16)... IT IS A 'TRD' TOYOTA, so none needed to get to the mission and out... It is my
third time in there... the last 2 in Tacomas... See photos in my web site. Neal Johns has been in there with his Tacoma too... Fishunter, as well...
Roy in his LR3 Land Rover... I have seen stock Jeep Cherokees in there too.
LONG AFTER that trip, I added the air bags and better shocks to halt the bottoming out issue when loaded... NOT for ground clearance... The 9.5 inches
of stock clearance is fine.
IT is all about not being stupid when driving, good tire placement, keeping it in 4WD (duh!), engage the low range in the steep sections, and use of a
rear locker for the Widowmaker climb, as seen in that photo (if so equiped).
http://vivabaja.com/403 for my stock '01 Tacoma going to 'Mission Impossible'.

I wouldn't trade my Jeep for a new TRD Tacoma

Know better than what? Joes Tacoma didn't have the TRD decals on his vehicle, but it did have the rear locker I believe.
I wouldn't ask the question if I already knew the answer. I just want to know if the Tacoma has two different lift heights? With his 28" tires,
there was very little space for additional tire to fit. The tread wasn't very aggressive either, and aired down, I doubt would be enough clearance to
get his Tacoma in and out of the Mission - let alone through the swamp.
I believe a stock Tacoma can tackle Baja Grande. A stock 4Runner did it last year. I wanted to know if the TRD package only included the rear locker
and cheepo-level Bilstein shocks, and the regular 4WD Tacoma had a different lift height.
Some Pole Line Road hightlights from the past 5 years...
