Congratulations Zac and Tracy!

Yes indeed... How exciting!

Everything (everything) changes when that new life enters this world... It really is wonderful!

Oh, and Baja is good for kids too! However, you may need to postpone trips until you are out of the diaper stage...

Listen to El Camote... He spent a week, in a van with my two kids back in 2001 and that still didn't scare him from becoming a father!!!

Hi all Matomi travelers,
As I understand the excursion starts in the President's weekend February 16 ? I would be interesting to go but ratherto walk than to drive. In fact i drove already this Matomi road from El Parral through the narrow gates of the lower Matomi Canyon to the sea - all its ruffled tracks, loose boulders, and terrible sand - and it was not a pleasure for my old backbone. Walking is nicer.

I think that the Aqua Caliente canyon or El Barrendo Canyon would be good for an ascent to the rim of San Pedro Martir , and Matomi canyon for a descent. If I find a company for such an adventure I think that I can start from San Diego on Thursday afternoon.

tajo

PS "San Pedro Martir Travesia" from Aqua Caliente to the Mission San Pedro and Rancho San Antonio would be also great - but much more complicated.

We may have to stop and let you catch up a little too often to make this very practicle over a 2.5 day weekend.

Yah, driving a group from Nuevo Mazatlan/ Bahia Santa Maria to Agua Caliente Canyon then Matomi and back in one day will be 'just' possible if the photo stops are brief. Walking this 100 mile day trip would take a few more days!

It is exactly 100 miles from my door at Santa Maria, south to Matomi wash, then out to the Rancho. Took us about 8 hours round trip which included many stops, a swim in the pond, and a long lunch, oh ya, a flat tire too.

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Here is one of the possible routes for Sunday:

Nuevo Mazatlan or Bahia Santa Maria:

Go to Hwy. 5 and to dirt road heading west near Km. 32 marker, just north of Nuevo Mazatlan road/ south of Mayma Rd. Set trip odometer to 0.0

4.3 Old Puertecitos Rd., turn south.

5.7 Azufre Wash (Caņada el Parral) Rd., turn west

6.4 Fork, go right for Valle Chico

30.3 Valle Chico Rd., left for Matomi, go right for Agua Caliente Canyon or Berrendo Canyon

33.8 Carricitos Jcn. (left for Berrendo 4.4 mi.), go right for Agua Caliente.

39.4 Agua Caliente ejido (Plan Nacional Agrario), turn left.

41.3 Enter Agua Caliente Canyon

45.2 Agua Caliente Hot Springs... Some hiking if road not through to springs.

Now, to go to Matomi and back to Hwy. 5:
Back track to Mile 30.3 above, and continue south to Matomi

60.1 Azufre Wash Jcn/ Valle Chico Rd.

68.6 Arroyo Matomi, turn right.

Take Arroyo Matomi east all the way to Hwy. 5...

That's it right there. When we get to the west end of Azufre, we will reassess if we have time to take the right for Agua Caliente and then to Rancho Matomi and pools or one or the other. Time of day and majority rules will apply.

No, I do not intend to do all 100 miles on foot - only a short loop from Rancho El Parral up El Barrendo Canyon or El Parral Canyon in direction of Matomi Peak ( or the next "mesa" peak of San Pedro Martir in the north direction ) - and to return along the well-known Matomi canyon - it can be about 25 miles in two and half days - Friday and Saturday and Sunday morning. Snow would be great ( no necessity to carry water !) but i do not believe in snow at the elevation lower than 5000.

I started to search "El Barrendo" in our forum and found some info in the "Canyon La Esperanza report" - what an astonishment to see my name - I did not know that G. Jide described our excursion . There was posted a problem if La Esperanza had any palms. Unfortunately I checked last year that there are no palms - reall very strange, it is wide, flat in the lower part , with plenty of running water, willows and waterfalls - i descended all the canyon from the top to the last boulder - from where I roped down to the last puddle , and with a great astonishment I found myself in a place, where we were stopped with G. and Christopher. I did not expect that because La Esperanza in the upper part is gigantic - and it is quite narrow at the blocking boulder , so I was afraid that the canyon described by "jide" is too small to be La Esperanza. In fact it was ! I will post my Esperanza photos later on in the "Canyon La Esperanza report" thread.
And the report of David and G. Jide about El Barrendo with thousands of palms makes me still more curious to explore that canyon up to the top.
