Mood: Have Baja Fever

[*] posted on 12-27-2008 at 06:36 PM

I thought from all my posts and trip reports and your personal observations, that you knew my truck wasn't 'modified' or has oversize tires...

It was after the July trip to 7 sisters, Asuncion and Mulege that I swapped the stock (yellow) Bilsteins for the 5100s (in back only) and had the Ride Rite air bags installed (all at ORW)... soley for the bottoming issue with the soft rear springs... without making the ride too hard (adjustable air bags).

The TRD package has the locking rear differential... and some do remove the stickers.

Reliability is the key to Baja travel... Not to say something can't happen to a Toyota... Neal Johns has even broke his Tacoma in Baja! Of course, Neal takes his EVERYWHERE... !!

Just the odds are that U.S. brand mid to small trucks and SUVs don't seem to hold up to the Toyota brand name. FULL SIZE trucks are a different matter... The Dodge and Ford owners here seem to really love their big trucks. Oh, the one Chevy truck owner I know loves his, too.

Mood: Pole Line Road postponed due to injury

[*] posted on 12-27-2008 at 08:44 PM

Well, I hated my mid-size Ford pickup. The thing was a waste of money. My neighbor has it now, and it is reliable for him, but he never takes the thing off road.

As for me, I would make the jump to a full-size pickup if I needed the carrying capacity, but an Unlimited Rubicon would be my next step up in size if cost was no object.

El Boogie Rojo

Fourteen years now in Baja...it's been beat on washboard, burned up,

and somehow brought back to life. All the electrical was replaced from one spool of black wire, and it only has one partially functioning brake, but it's still going strong:

I'm looking forward to actually have time to restore it (again).

BigWooo------My brother-in-law and sister had a Manx break in two during a huricane near Guerro Negro on a trip to Cabo on the old dirt road way back when, before the pavement-----------stranded in GN for 3 days having it welded back together. It was a fun machine, tho, when operative.

(He had it way overloaded)

I'm not sure I could handle driving to Cabo in one, but we've had a great time with this car. That would have been an adventure though.

Hey Barry, I never even knew GN really existed until after the hiway was laid west of El Arco. I remember the brand new La Pinta/ El Presidente and gas station but never looked around there much. Was the town there and I missed it?

Don't know the status of the town of GN then, but I am reporting what my B_IN_LAW told me, and he had pictures. I think it was just before the road was paved---certainly not after. Maybe it wasn't a town----just a "stop" along the way, with some mechanics??? Don't really know. He broke the Manx by taking a flooded vado (wash) too fast-----thank goodness he had a British Land Rover along with him or he would have froze to death----the land rover hauled him out of the vado, and into GN--------he said it was really cold, and everything was flooded for miles.

Wow, that is truly great!!! My Nissan "Off-Road" X-terra was soft in the rear, but Nissan would not do anything about it----ended up spending quite a bit for the Calmini double add-a-leaf pack, and that sure cured the problem.

Your experience was much better, tho.

dt's Wagoneer photo reminded me that our first Baja rig was a white Jeep Wagoneer... The family Baja vehicle was #1 for us!

My dad owned 2 Wagoneers... First one (1965) was great, the second one (1970) was no good... traded it for a 1972 4WD Suburban... that had engine problems from the start... got a '73 Ford wagon that was perfect and lasted him the rest of his life ('till 1989).

My first Baja vehicle (1973) was a Myers Manx VW buggy... my second was a '75.5 Jeep Cherokee Chief... loved it when it ran, had numerous failures... Sold it and got a '77.5 Subaru 4WD Wagon... That little car was amazing... Had three of them over several years...

Here's mine, Finnegan, a 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara. It's never been to the Baja but we leave in 5 days, for 5 months of sunshine! If the Baja chews it up and spits it out it's a just a trade-in on a new Toyota :)

I added Nomad stickers, lifted to 10 inches of ground clearance, 29.5" tires, upgraded suspension and airlift 1000 air bags to help with the load of camping gear. Coming soon to a fish taco stand near you.

Thanks Bajacat! I'm counting the days now. Yep, fulltime 4 wheel drive 4x4 with locking center diff with H/L transfer case, ABS/TC/ESP/Hill Descent and plenty of oomph, rare for a Suzuki :)

ZED...

..the orange flash. Traded our '83 Chevy S-10 truck for this fine steed 6 1/2 years ago. New gas tank, ignition parts, used tires, rustoleum paint job and he's a force to be reckoned with. Here he is with his biggest fan.

"Who's Zed? Zed is dead, baby, Zed is dead"

Can anyone identify the quote?
