You make a good point, Skeet. This truck may not be rented at all. Not uncommon to see private U-haul vehicles.

I'm writing Nancy Grace about this whole affair. That should guarantee it's place in history.

Add the U-Haul to this catagory of fiction. Maybe Skeet's right. How can anybody believe in a "Ghost U-Haul" but, won't believe in Jeeeezus.

In modern English, the term ghost ship has come to denote at least one of three separate (though occasionally overlapping) definitions, all of which involving, in one respect or other, unexplained circumstances. Historically, the term has been used to refer to reported sightings of apparitions over water that have appeared in the form of maritime sailing ships, often after having previously been known to have sunk, or to derelict vessels found floating with no crew. In fiction, ghost ships have often been vessels crewed by some manner of spectral or non-living beings

We are in La Paz. Spend a day looking for U-Hual. No luck. Town getting kind of big to look for a specific vehicle, so I think we give up. Lots of old folks wandering around though, especially at Wal Mart.:biggrin:

My great, great, great, great etc. grandfather was an ensign on the Flying Dutchman, so my great, great, great etc. grandmother claimed.

So, maybe this U Haul is destined to travel the Baja roads, especially #1, forever.:no:

Both are indications that this is a rental - not an older vehicle taken out of the fleet in a private-party purchase.

Sometimes I wish I had not even posted anything and other times I am pleased that the information is out there. If I were the old couple, I can well imagine that I would be frustrated how things get taken out of your hands in terms of individual choices and you are always subjected to " Big Brother's" opinions of what is best for you, especially when no one listens to an old lady's idea of what she wants to do. On the other hand, I would want to provide some level of intervention and control if this were my parents running around Mexico. Then the romantic side takes over and I think about how cool it is that my parents were taking one last fling in Baja and I would wish them Godspeed from afar and chew my fingernails off from a distance. It seems that this world of safety and control is a rather daunting place for the free spirit that lives inside us all and begs to be let loose.
One of the saddest sights I have ever experienced was an eagle that had broken its wing and was being cared for in a wildlife park in Alaska. This poor bird was only a shell of what it once was and instead of flying the skies and eating what it was able to kill, it sat on a post, looking at dumb tourists and waited for the manager to feed it. The fire that used to be in it's eyes was gone and clouded over.
Maybe the lady is doing one last flight just because she can and is communicating to the world that she is not done yet and not quite ready to set on the porch in the swing and waiting for the assisted living folks to bring over "meals on wheels."

I agree with Doug having seen the vehicle it looked like a current rental vehicle.

What Pescador said!!!!!!!!!

While none of us know the logic or rational of how they ended up where ever they may be at the moment, I applaud all but their having done it illegally by bringing a U-Haul truck into Mexico. From one perspective, I'm amazed they made it all the way to La Paz....from another perspective, I'm not at all surprised! :smug:

I'm gonna dig out my old cassette with "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" on it!:bounce:

Maybe this is a geriatric Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, or Thelma & Louise caper. The end game hasn't been revealed yet. They are still in transit. :?: Perhaps Jehovah has a doozie to witness.

Dennis suggested the "Ghost Ship" possibility. Another tale of a ghost ship: Author, B. Traven wrote a novel titled Ghost Ship. An obsolete cargo ship is dispatched far out into the ocean and then scuttled. Unfortunately, the crew didn't know that explosives would be detinated, sending the ship to the bottom. About a 1/2 second of surprise there. :o A one way trip to be sure. Then the shipping company would file an insurance claim. I'm not saying there is a parallel here...but We All Live in a Yellow Submarine (thank you Beatles) The imagination allows for an infinite amount of possible scenarios; the real one, as related, is no less strange.

I hope they are having the time of their lives. I have had quite a few myself, but if this were my Uhaul trip and if I were in my 80s, it may well be the highlight of a lifetime of crazy adventures.

I just hope nothing horrible (violent) happens to them, that no one vitimizes them, that they are still experiencing some life happiness, and that they won't have major legal repercussions after this. I do not think they are trying to be 'bad'. I hope the remainder of their life will be happy.

I'd like to think they're blissfully happy - they might even think they've arrived IN Arizona by about now, what, with the desert landscape... Wal Marts... Costcos... etc.

Of course the sight of the Sea of Cortez might add a little confusion to that virtual reality.... or on the other hand, possibly just even more pleasure.

(comments above intended as innocent fun - along with having continuing concerns for the situation and for their safety)

Vaya con dios!

Well said, Doug. The story is so bizarre that a little humor can't be avoided. And yet, most of us feel compassion for these people and hope for the best outcome.

Well ,I sure hope they don't get popped for stealing a truck. If U-Haul determines that the truck is stolen will these God fearing people end up in some Mexicam cell like that old guy who's son took photos of a girl in a store?

No word from U-Haul yet?

I wonder how many 80 year old people rent their trucks...and don't return them...
