you guys actually expect a bypass around 4 bridges in 2 weeks? it seems like the rain machine is slowing down but far from running outta gas!

Yes, I expect there to be a bypass around all the bridges. Now this may wash out again with more rain, but as before another bypass will be built. This is nothing new for Baja. The road is the life and commerce line of Baja.
When Hurricane Nora hit San Felipe the road was washed out in several places and until the road was repaired a bypass was constructed around the wash outs.
I am not overly concerned about the wash outs unless there is a river running. That's what 4 wheel drive is for:cool:. I am more concerned about the condition of the road to the mission and the widow-maker..

As we know it's better to be in Baja than hanging around here.. Where are you going?? If I can not make it to the mission there is always San Felipe and Gonzaga... BTW the road is now paved past Puertecitos up and down and past Huerfanito with the exception of the bridge... The views are spectacular and the scenery will rival that of the drive through Conception Bay..

COMANDANTE, going around Gonzaga will more miles and we only have a weedend to do this trip, most off us have to come back Monday, soi if conditions don't get better in the next 2 weeks, this trip will not be happining.Lets wait for the next storm that is coming in tuesday to see the outcome, and will take from there, I agree with Woody (you guys actually expect a bypass around 4 bridges in 2 weeks? it seems like the rain machine is slowing down but far from running outta gas!),if the trip will be cancel unless people want to go by them selfs. Remember Baja Will be there after all this goes away, thanks for your understanding, will report later.

10-4, the mission has been there for over 240 years... it will be there after February, if things are not improved enough for us to go.

Sorry if my message was not clear. I meant going to San Felipe and Gonzaga in leiu of the mission. If this trip is canceled, I have plenty of room for everyone in San Felipe, We can use my house and couple of trailers as a base camp to ride, fish, explore or just hang out.. If people want to camp out I have 100mts of beach front at Matomi that Nomads are welcome to use gratis...

Let's hope the rain lets up...

Where approx. is your place Loco?

We have done the President's Day 'Matomi' Event from El Camote's in El Dorado Ranch (2001), in Nuevo Mazatlan (2004), and at Baja Warrior's at Bahia Santa Maria the last times (I missed those)...

BTW, Tunaeater, my son and I, were with you guys on the 2004 Matmoi ride.

Thanks for the reminder.. forgot to include it in my post. My house is located at k43 campo San Antonio. Turn left at the R U Lost sign just past K43 go up the small hill , turn right and you are at the trailers and the house. Look for the white old Trooper with the rear wheel off.. If you get to K44 you went to far..

The beach available for camping is located in Matomi south of

Latitude:30.46656 Longitude:-114.63605 GPS location

The access road to the beach for camping is past about 2km past the Pozo which is at k60 at:

Latitude:30.47365 Longitude:-114.66169 You will note a rock painted white with a red bulls eye on the left side of the road as you head south. Turn left here

I hope I did not invert these....

So BAJACAT, what's the prognosis of this trip? Wait and see? If there is 14 days sun after this week's storm (and hopefully not more than, say, 1/2 inch this time, I think might be "go". What do you think the 13 miles to the mission is like now? You know that arroyo got totally filled up - maybe eroded some of the vados (cross-feeding streams en route) and uphill out of the dips to expose more rock. I would be a passenger, regardless. But for you all with the guts and gears, is there a Plan B? Is anyone able to contact Raph Schoonmaker who lives in the arroyo to ask about conditions?

Good old Ralph. He bailed me out big time when my fan hit my radiator and ripped it open. I did not have enough epoxy to fix it and he had some. He was a real help.

I'm still up for it, the byspass for the bridges will be there for sure.
I'm concerned a little bit with the arroyos on the way to SMM, specially the bog after the widowmaker.

I'll wait and see.

What about that new "drop-off" at the bottom of that nasty hill? That will be your nemesis. All the arroyos will have new sharp banks. Road building may be necessary. Perhaps before you go down you should walk it completely. It would be a real bummer to have to back up that mother.

There's a new "Drop-Off?" Has anyone seen this, or is this just desert lore?

Conjecture Ken. After big events like this arroyos can change dramatically.

I agree. But, while in Guerrero Negro receiving big rains, MSM recieved barely any [11/08]. That's why I doubt any real rain could have damaged this region. I like to just wait and see rather than rule out an entire run somebody's trying to set up.

No, I wouldn't go that far as to cancel, just be prepared for suprises. Someone just noted how big the arroyos were running thru Catavina.

The rains probably caused more damage closer to the entrance to the MSM trail than on the actual trail due to its location to the 'Cortez.

While our group was in Guerrero Negro we got poured on - even in Cataviņa, we had steady rains.

Some standing water, but steady rains followed that evening all the way up Hwy 1.

The rain clouds all broke up over the 'Cortez and just floated away...

The best part of it was the absence of dust on the trail that day.

The rock crawling was 1st rate that day! :bounce:
