Barb, you know it's bad ju-ju to pick on Nick.

Hi Barb, you're right about the three teams. We're headed out in a couple of hours to be there at the start of the event. As I passed the campground last night, I saw three bicycles hanging from the tree. Not sure if that's customary, or if it was kids being creative. Wouldn't it be great to plant a bicycle tree that would bear fruit every year? In a way, that is what's happening. Diane and John planted the seeds, the volunteers are the branches, and the bikes and the kids are the fruit.

It was a really fun afternoon and the food was plentiful and yummy...Asuncion club (Shayo) brought an awesome pulpo c-cktail, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, Zoe's famous potato salad, chocolate cake...I'm still full.

It was nice to see the kids hanging together...that was the idea...to foster friendship...and involve everybody.

Here is the Nomad cheerleader squad. thank you all for helping out.

We are just so pleased that others have decided to join in the fun and help support the Lobos Marinos in Asuncion. We hope it will be an ongoing support.

Barb, in the Mulege District there are several teams---
Guerrero Negro
Vizcaino
San Ignacio
Rancho Carocal (sp)
Bahia Asuncion
Last year one from Mulege joined in
and now La Bocana
Don't think I forgot any.

Depending on where the race is, some teams arrive just for the day, others the night before. While it is competitive, the teams are all very friendly with each other and help each other out----there is a real sense of it all being one big team in many ways.

After the district races, there are state races etc. for which some of the riders qualify.

But the little ones are the most fun to watch---the ones that still have training wheels on their bikes. The courses are adjusted for the ages of the riders. Like in Asuncion, only the older kids and adults ride up and down the big hill, and the real little ones just ride either in or along side the stadium.

This year, in October, they are planning a race from Vizcaino over the mountains to San Fransquito on the Gulf----that should be something. I am sure the little ones won't make that ride.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what a fun weekend and how inspiring .... Shari, you REALLY made it possible for the teams to make friends and I will be forever grateful to you and Sirena and Adrian and Zoe and Jim and Laurie and the plant guy, Chris who saved the day for Argenis, our guy whose inner tube blew. His dad came out today, last minute to watch him ... we really needed him to finish and make his dad proud !! and of course, thanks to Juan who lets you disappear and help us out for hours and hours ....

we loved the beach house ... so much we want to come back...pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

we donated a beautiful young girl's bike to Chayo at the end of the races ... asuncion really needs help in getting new members and bikes and parts.... the people in the leagues are complaining about coming to asuncion when there are so few riders ...... Chayo also needs a special tire for a bike thats down - I will post a pic on facebook and perhaps sirena/shari can post it here ... and maybe a BajaNomader can find the tire - all I remember is 22/700 ??? I just support everyone, I understand zilch about bikes !!

I have a suggestion. bike stores in the states are so kind and into donating to poor kids.. do any of you know some stores who might help out asuncion and g negro ????? I have lucked out and have a wonderful store that is really being the BEST for us, but I promised Chayo and Homar that I wd find them a connection. if anyone can give me a lead in san diego, I will follow up and make it happen !!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

thanks again to all of you in asuncion - this is a weekend to remember :)forever ....

Go Blanca---we hope someone can find another connection---we had no luck with any of the stores in the south bay area where we are. The one store that promised help never really came through--and we hit them all. Chris, the plant guy is going to work on some in his neck of the woods.

We did have a lot of help and support from our nephew with Giant who helped out a lot a few years ago and financial support from some donors from the Baja Nomads and elsewhere, but the nephew started a family and things have changed. And there were others from the beginning who worked to obstruct our efforts to support this activity for reasons we do not fully understand.

And risking once again at being told we are sending guilt trips, this is the first year that any of the ex-pat property owners in Bahia Asuncion have shown an interest. We really are happy that Shari decided for the first time this year to get involved and brought a few of her followers along with her. Whatever it takes for the sake of the children.

We know the tires Chayo is looking for and they are quite expensive. After our recent donations, we are rather tapped out right now and he spends a lot of money out of his own pocket. So we do hope you can find some more donors. Just for information for others, we do get discounts from the bike shop at REI when we buy directly from the shop and not just the store.

If there are bikes available, there will be riders. So Blanca, thank you and go for it---you and your efforts we will support. And kudos to Shari for deciding this year to jump in and support this activity.

We are bringing another bike down---it is old but in great shape.

The teams have a real tradition of being friends and helpful to each other, and it sounds like you will continue with the long time tradition.

Good---glad to hear that. And we do wish her luck.

The bike store that said they would sponsor the Lobos Marinos was a real disappointment. We had spent a lot of time canvassing stores, and we were thrilled when we found the one. His name, Rick Nunez is even on the front of the uniforms.

He seemed so excited and even added the team to his web page---as his team in Mexico. We bought a jersey for him that he proudly displayed in his store.

But in the end, all he donated were a few small boxes of junk---used parts are one thing, junk is something else. We kept trying, but it did not work. His effort was like some others who want to make a big splash to look good, like an infomercial, and then fade away.

So other than the outright donations from others, and some discounts on parts, the bike shop thing did not work, and many in this area are chain stores, -----but, that is not to say that it will not work somewhere.

Blanca, we know you are really dedicated to this and best of luck to you. If you do have better luck with a bike store around here, we can help on this end. Meanwhile, we will collect what we can, but a real sponsor is what would make the real difference.

we all thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and thank you Blanca for working so hard to bring it all together...it was very heartening to see everyone helping each other out and making new friends. I will work on the photos today.

My tough little guy in the photo won 1st place in his division and then he continued to ride behind the other divisions too...he actually did the 8 km course on his little bike behind the adults...Chris the plant guy managed half the course and was cheered loudly at the finish line!!! way to go chris

Actually dianne, this is NOT the first time I've helped out the bike club...I realize I have not contributed the amount you have but I do what I can...I'm pretty busy but this particular time I had the time to responded to a direct request for help from Blanca and we all pulled together a successful event thanks to our amigos here...(please dont call my friends "followers"...I find it rather offensive...we have cultivated meaningful friendships over the last few years where we support each other and share wonderful experiences together.)

Hi Blanca- no we have not met yet but I'm sure you met my mother, Zoe, over the weekend. We're expecting our second baby any day and plan to return to BA in July for a quick visit. Maybe we can arrange a visit then. Your enthusiasm is contagious:biggrin:

Adrian and I might be going up to Ensenada in the next few weeks and bringing back his car, although we can't really fit bikes on/in it if there are any parts or boxes you need brought down we will gladly find some space for them!

We had loads of fun this weekend and really enjoyed meeting the rest of the people from the other bike clubs, the kids were soooo cute and serious about the competitions!

Although I must admit I very much enjoyed the yummy food at the BBQ...(wonder why )
Big thanks to everyone that made it possible!!
