TRUCK WANTED:OLDIE PREFERRED
We need an old but strong truck that runs to haul rock and building supplies. An old 70's Ford or similar would be best as they have thick steel bed
which hold up to rock carrying. Doesn't have to be imported or anything. Also looking for a 1999 4X4 Suburban half ton. Ya never know till ya ask
right?

Shari,
I am selling my "Baja-proven" '82 Chevy Silverado 4x4. Details and pics available at http://www.loshermanoslocos.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=820
At the moment, I have removed the caravan top (all steel, all welded, washboard-proof), selling separately- was asking $750 but may take $500. (They
are over $3k new)
The Chevy has a 2" lift, good condition 33" Yokohama Geolandars, rebuilt 350, new'ish' transmission, bull-bar bumper & 8000# winch. At the
moment, a lumber rack with custom sunshade.
Asking $3,500, negotiable w or w/o winch etc.
One caveat, needs to be registered in AZ or imported to Baja. Even though compression is tight, catalytic converter removed. Has headers and
glasspacks for mucho power but won't pass asinine California standards.
Located on border in San Luis, AZ. U2U me if interested.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

Oso...did you know...
in CA you can register your car without a smog test...
or CAT Converter...
if....
the car is located in Baja
you have a mailing address there....
and it would be a hardship to bring it back just for the smog test....
i'm glad i'm in baja whenever my smog test is due

Hay Bob can you make a separate thread and post more details on this. I get 2 or 3 people a week asking about this and you are the first one I know
that knows anything about it..

thanks OSO but I was thinking of something in the $2,000-2,500 range...a beater that runs and because I live in Baja I don't have to import it. I
drive a Trooper with 2000 plates and have done so for 6 years. Let me know if the price drops.

Bruce
fill out this form and state that the car is in Mexico and give the address
Then say it would be a hardship to bring it back to only smog...
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg256.pdf
mail it in. Easy
now....when buying
family member gave me a car. Is a smog inspection required?
If you acquire a vehicle that is currently registered in California from a spouse, domestic partner, sibling, child, parent, grandparent, or
grandchild, you are entitled to an exemption from the smog inspection.
NO SMOG REQUIRED
Other family members or relations are not exempt and are required to obtain a smog inspection certification.
"grey area" cars always come from a relative
shari
If you don't import the new car you are buying you should at least get a ten year temp import permit so you are legal.

Are you sure that applies bringing a car from another state. I was told by a supervison in Sacto. that I would have to have a smog test bringing it
to CA registration from AZ even thouth no change in ownership and car had previously been registered to me in CA. If you have a address in Imperial
county - there are no periodic smog checks, jmust change of ownership and bringing from another state.

Bob, Susan; I don't get it.
The DMV document says you can exempt the smog test except if you are in NV or Mexico...? and that is for transfer of ownership, not renewal so how
do you keep renewing. My car will never leave the Baja because I'm not going back. Definitely a hardship to get it smogged.

D'you mind one more question? Thanks. What do you do about the insurance requirement. Does DMV accept Mexican Insurance policies? or do you buy
liability insurance and then cancel? My registration renews end of July.

Thank You
Bob. You just solved a problem I was about to undertake. I wanted to take my old jeep to Todos Santos and leave it. I struggle every 2 years to smog
it anyway. I want to put Mexican plates on it, but doubt I will have the documentation for a while. This is very important Info. Thank you very much.

One day insurance can be purchased for the day of renewal (California) If the vehicle is in Mex. your US insurance doesn't cover liability anyway.

Besides filling out the exemption form, in Sacramento DMV, we have to show proof of Mexican Insurance. No California insurance necessary. We have a
Suburban and a Toyota here in Loreto and have been doing this by mail for years. And now, if we do have any questions we talk to the DMV office on
Skype for next to nothing.

gracias amigo but an 88 is too new, we need something made before 1980 that has a stronger box to hold up to rock trips as we're building a stone
addition to our B&B.
