Article in the Union-Tribune, 12-10-03 page F-3. Monterrey a boat load of scientists and scholars are getting ready to re-create John Steinbeck's
famous 1940 voyage from Monterey to Mexico's Sea of Cortez. They will leave Monterey on March 11, the same date the Steinbeck expedition sailed. VERY

"The Log From the Sea Of Cortez
Interesting article. I saved it for future reference. I have a copy of Steinbeck's "Hovering Over Baja" and was looking for a copy of "The Log From
the Sea Of Cortez". None in the San Diego book stores. Looked on line and found some, but the cheapest was about $800. Any ideas on how to get a copy
at a reasonable price - under a $100? I think I paid about $30 for the hardback copy of "Hovering"

I found a copy in my local library which since Steinbeck is such a famous author I imagine there are a lot of library copies floating around out
there.

OK, I just told my wife, who is the one who wanted the book. She says I'm mistaken, she has "The Log From the Sea of Cortez", got it for $10. What she
wants is "The Sea of Cortez" by Steinbeck. Oh well, after 47 years we're still learning to communicate. NOW, Jimmie: First, My son and I were in Los
Barriles for two weeks in October and I asked him if he knew where you live - he didn't. The next time we're there I'd like to look you up. Second: I
hear you telling me that Steinbeck didn't write "Hovering Over Baja" I believe you, so will you please give us the full story? Also, my wife tells me
that "Doc" Ricketts is the one who really wrote the "The Log From the Sea of Cortez", although she says Steinbeck's name is on it also. I'll dig
around some more to look for "Sea of Cortez" She just showed me "The Log", it's a paperback and in mint condition. One more thing, does anyone know
if Steinbeck really wrote "Grapes of Wrath"???

I have 'Hovering Over Baja', and as Jimmy Smith can tell you, the man who wrote it is 'Famous Author' or FA for short! (inside joke... read Jimmy's
book).
Hint: 'FA' financed the helicopter expeditions with revenue earned from his 'Brick laying Lawyer' character.

The "Sea of Cortez" by Steinbeck is a valid title and readily available. Of course readily needs to be qualified by the cost of the book. The several

Kris, Ray Cannon's book is also the same name... just more well known (I have 3 and one is autographed to me from Ray in '67).

Well, I found my copy of Hovering Over Baja. I blush! Steinbeck wrote it under a the pen name of Erle Stanley Gardner! Thanks for being so kind in
setting me straight. I first saw the book at Larry and Rachels Resort Hotel at Bajia Los Angeles about a year ago when Larry brought it out. I later
found a copy in good condition on line and bought it. A good picture of Antero Diaz in it. Is that the one who is (was) called "Papa Diaz?"

Yes!
Antero Diaz was 'Papa' and Cruz Diaz (Sra. Diaz) was Cruz (even though she was called 'Mama'). I think in her later years she wasn't as opposed to
strangers calling her mama, but it really bugged her in the sixties, I recall.

field notes or catalog of the trip, or something of that ilk. Sea of Cortez was not popular literature but rather a scientific or at least a
naturalists tome.
I too would love to find a copy of Sea of Cortez but probably couldn't afford it if I found it.
Last year I took my paperback copy of LOG with me and had great fun reading about the places I was staying -- including Mulege!
What pen name is Steinbeck using these days. Is he on this board?

If you are interested in this voyage, required reading is "Searching for Steinbeck's Sea of Cortez, (2002), by Andromeda Romano-Lax. It details the
author's voyage in a 22 foot sailboat following Steinbeck's and Ricketts's cruise route.
Interesting book, even for an Aridologist that hates water.

Jimmy is back home. I took him and Sally, his daughter, to the airport in TJ am of this past Tuesday for the flight home. Don't think you will ever
find either of them in Otra Lado again.
