Another Robbery...

Ran into a friend last night who told me his buddies got pulled over on the toll road at 3am I believe early Friday morning north of Rosarito. They were in a 3 truck caravan on the way to spend a month at San Juanico.

Same MO as reported by the Labor Day weekend incident that was widely reported except this time on the toll road.

They reported that the robbers seemed like they were on speed. They accused them of drunk driving and that they were going to take their vehicles. They managed to keep their vehicles but lost a lot of cash. Not sure how they got out of it yet. I do know that they cancelled their trip and came straight home and are extemely shaken.

Should be getting more details direct from the source to report here soon.

I actually drove through TJ at 5:30am Sat. morning of Labor Day weekend just one hour after the reported incident at the top of the hill along the fence. Feel very lucky, won't be doing that again.

Bottom line. Drive during the day.

Why don't we pitch our money together and hire our own Nomads patrol? It amazes me that the Mexican government cannot even protect the toll road....

What amazes me is the fact that after so many people have posted troubles that they have had on the toll road at around 3:00 am, people still insist on travelining it, I just don't get it...

Neither do I.

Where has common sense gone?

I wouldn't drive thru TJ at 4AM in 1970, and wouldnt do it now.
Then again, a resident of TJ wouldnt want to drive 3 blocks south of Little Tokyo in LA at 4 in the afternoon!

Well, I prefer driving through TJ at 5:00am myself. I don't have to worry about all the reckless traffic and inattentive drivers.

But regardless of when we prefer to drive, why can't the police keep the highway safe? I can't imagine getting robbed on the highway in the states and not complaining to the authorities. Why do the travelers of Baja as well as those that benefit from tourism fail to demand safe highways?

Think about it...how hard would it be to have a dedicated group of patrol cars?

Blackwater comes to mind. Do you think the government would object?

They do but with limmited numbers, if you notice almost every time you are at the toll gate you see the federal highway patrol there and it's because it's a federal highway.
If you are on this road, you have to depend on the Federal highway patrol and no one else, no city police, no State police or municipal or PEP, why? they don't have jurisdiction, it's a legal issue, here is a note were the chief of police sais it better:
http://www.frontera.info/edicionenlinea/nota.asp?NumNota=263...

They get the call but they would have to pay a toll.

City cops will probably not come to your rescue, those are the ones in patrol cars in the cities like Tijuana Rosarito or Ensenada.
State cops will probably not come to your rescue, those are the ones with PEP, like the ones that got killed and a nomad is asking for donations for.
Both of these police forces are "preventive" only.
Neither one of these have jurisdiction to go to the toll road.
Just the federal police

Just the facts

For those that "Love" the new Blvd 2000, know this;
Most locals don't want to travel it;
http://www.frontera.info/buscar/traernotanew.asp?NumNota=492...

So maybe if we wise up we will take the free road?

This is a response I received from Anna Clearley a SD Union Tribune writer. I think she she would follow up on stories like this if she could get a contact person with the facts. Here is her E-mail address:
anna.cearley@uniontrib.com

Thanks for your message, Russ.
We are trying to follow up on some of those incidents. I have just two that i can confirm with the persons involved. I haven't been able to reach any other people in regards to other cases, but i also have been sidetracked lately with some other stories so i haven't been able to give it my full attention.
It helps when readers can alert me as to things like this, in particular if they have heard about something and have a way of reaching the victims.
We rely in part on readers like you because we can't be everywhere at all times. So , thanks for checking in with me and if you have any links to web sites where other cases are being covered, can you let me know?
Where do you live in Baja? Anna

Maybe if she was to print it on the San Diego Union people would start using the free road.
It's in a way wierd that some here talk about boycoting but no one mentions boicoting the toll road wich seems to be the problem.

They talked the robbers out of taking the vehicles? Nice trick.

What about folks whose condos are ON the toll road and there's no way to access from the free road without going on the toll road?:?:

the problem seems to be going south. take the free road to rosarito and backtrack north...or to la fonda area and backtrack... or just hold on tight and roll the dice...

it seems if you don't have all the toys and a $45k truck they aren't targeting you, yet!

it took these folks a while to figure out many of us like to roll through during the wee hours of the morning, hoping to avoid any cops, accidents, traffic, etc. if we all started using the free road i think they would catch on rather fast and then we would have a problem on the free road...changing locations isn't necessarily going to change the behavior...

So we should not even try and keep paying them a toll for no "0" protection?
Mr. Spock would say it is illogical

Please do let us know. It would be nice if they could talk directly to the reporter to generate public interest in this issue. We used to drive through at 4AM, but this year we'll cross at 6...and I'm bummed to wait!
