How much gas do you normally pump? Less than $5? Odd indeed!

Say the dollar (or peso) bill amount out loud, when you hand it to them... Have an idea of how much it will need and only have that much with you (the rest stays in the car's hiding place)... if the 'bandito' asks for more, you don't have anymore!

He has to be talking dollars. Been a long time since I've seen a 5 peso bill.
He said he gave the attendant the 50$ and turned to leave. Must have bought 50 bucks worth of gas. The whole transaction sounds kinda screwy.
C'mon back, DrTom, and fill in the blanks.

That happened to us 2x. only the first was successful. It was a 200 peso note verses a 20 peso note. You give a 200. With great slight of hand talent , suddenly the guy is waving a 20 at you with a sad look saying you made a mistake senor. The 1st time we figured it out at the airport. Bummer.. The second time my husband realized it before we left the lot. went back to the attendent said "give me my F------ money" the attendant then held up his roll of bills, my husband took a 200 peso note and we left. Obviously this worked enough the man could make up the diference at the end of the evening. We now warn whoever is heading down there. I have to say the guys are quick. We also noticed that when you start with one attendent and they change mid transaction, Watch out. I think sometimes the first one is aware but does not want to participate in the scam.

We got ripped of at that same Pemex almost three years ago on our first time flying out of SJD and turning in our rental car. They did the not zeroing out scam on us - we knew we'd been had, but only heard later how it was done. They count on people being in a hurry and pre-occupied with getting to their flight, etc.

The guy knew Amir spoke Spanish and English and even had the nerve to ask him how to say in English, "You must stay in the car." Ha! Don't stay in the car or park so you can see the pump. But they are quick. Have not been hit with the you gave me a $20 instead of $200. Easier when they think you don't speak Spanish or are in a hurry. So Sorry this happened to you. An expensive lesson.

when cruising cabo, I always buy 100 or 200 pesos. Depending on tank level.

answers to questions: took 30$ to fill the tank, and my uncertainty of what I handed the attendant is what allowed it to work....
And yes, i am a doctor (of veterinary medicine) and believe it or not, harder to get into vet med school than human med school, but the day they did the slight of hand/dollar passing test as an entrance requirement, i was absent....

Although I understand your sense of violation Doc, I always expect to get ripped off at least once every trip, it just about always happens when I am distracted and in a hurry. Anyway, once I have been shortchanged, I figure my dues have been paid, and usually that really is the only rip off I face the rest of my time on the road.

I don't think it has any bearings on how intelligent a person is, we are all suitable candidates for a rip off.

Here on the mainland at the big bus stations the old squirt you with mustard in the bus station scam is a popular way to pick pocket, talk about being distracted, someone bumping into you with mustard, leaves one totally consumed with the mess while another person slips in for the take. So, if you ever get hit with mustard, worry where your wallet is, not about the mess.

In the end, much better to be ripped off, than be the guy ripping you off. I know this of little consolation, but it is what I always tell myself.

OK, I think I've got it:

Call out the peso note when you pay, and don't focus on the mustard.
or was it
Call out mustard, and focus on the peso...

Another common scam is that they will only give you back only about half of your change, pause (as they wait for you to grab the change and leave in a hurry) and then give you the rest of your change only if they see that you are aware and awake.

This scam happens more often when getting/giving money to someone behind a counter, etc..

When it comes to pumping gas, pay in pesos, stand near the attendant, and make sure the pump is "zeroed" out before they start pumping.

I had the opposite problem...

Last month heading north, I filled up in Ensenada. The total was 360 pesos. I gave the Pemex attendant a 500 note and he gave me 240 in change. He was happy when I showed him his math error and I gave him 100 back.

A small deposit to my karma account.
