Making your own water in Baja

Here is the still I drew for a while back for Nomads to examine. it is very easy to build and operate. Works well in the Baja environment.

The straw may be a problem but is not necessary, it just saves peeling back the plastic.

Hi Sharksbaja,

I just built one of your stills on the beach - hoping for a sufficient yield to make tea this afternoon.

While I was at it, I retrived my PUR 06 Survivor from the bodega, a hand-held desalinator that I haven't touched for at leat 6 years. It smells rather evil from the biocide inside, but I shall try that again as well.

Rob: I'll be interested to hear your results.

Thanks,

Very cool rob!

Yep, just make sure you saturate the sand thoroughly. It may require a few gallons.

If you do this above the hi-tide mark you will have better results as dry heated sand makes the best place for rapid condensation.

The adjoining hot ambient sands(as opposed to cool seawater soaked sands) add speed to the process.

Please report!

tw, those bio-filters have a given lifespan. If it stinks I might worry on the downside of it.

When I first saw the title of this thread I was thinking of a different use of the term "make water"

But, it may require a few gallons ? good lord :wow:

Looks like a good project to experiment with when there's no surf but lots of sun and beer! Thanks for posting.

brilliant idea! this looks to be a variation of the traditional desert survival still, where you build basically the same arrangement but put a bunch of cut nopalitos inside as your water source----for when you're not near the sea. i'd never thought of using it with seawater. another good reason why a little clear plastic sheeting is a great thing to always carry.

of course, you might want to dig the hole at night, so you don't sweat out more water digging the hole than the yield from the still..........???

"Making your own water"

Well, back where I came from that phrase had a whole different meaning.... so to speak.
