Just Got Over Charged For Gas El Suazal
Hi Guys, I just filled up my tank in El Sauzal Pemex (not the Colinas Del Mar Station). I put in 477 pesos worth to fill up and magically my credit
card slip was charged 700 pesos. This has happened before 20 pesos over once. Before I would sign the slip, I made him give me 223 pesos change. He is
a younger kid and wears a rosary around his neck. So instead of him getting a 5 pesos propino he got nothing. Like I do, always check your total at
the pump and then match it with the receipt. If you guys go there beware of the future sacerdote.

Good advice and good catch. You have to be sure the pump starts at zero as well. Some things never change.

I never pay with a card, only with cash pesos...
There is a three or four percent tarriff added when using cards.

well, I've been had every which way you can be had and no matter how hard I look, they are way smarter than me at those places that pull that stuff
off. Luckily, most are just cool places to do business.
Of course, think of the national scam going on with those oil company execs in front of our spineless congress! Gotta love those Pemex kids!!!

no tariff on my card, it just depends what kind of credit card you use and I get great conversion rates plus cash back gotta make sure your card is
for traveling and that usually eliminates tarifs and penalties

A guy I know swears by Capital One. Says they have the most idiotic business practices sometimes but their overseas rates are pretty good.

The card company may not add a tariff to your bill, but I would be surprised if that Pemex station didn't add 4% for using plastic (to cover what his
bank or the card company charges him).
Baja Cactus (El Rosario) will accept plastic, but adds only what the bank/ card company chrges him.

.....seems to be a common practice to show you the calculator, the total pesos on pump and then multiply that amount by the posted exhange rate to
arrive at your bill in US$. you get a duble whammy if you didn't notice that the $ amount is greater than the peso amount. at 11 to one the
multipication instead of division costs you an additional 20%.

I also use my Capital One card when outside the US, they give the current exchange and don't add a 3 or 4 percent fee for using it outside the US like
other banks do.

not any more. the surcharge was dropped several weeks ago. paying with credit card is the ony way to go
but remember, only get gas at cualli stations. they really are more reputable (honest)!!

Yeah. The same thing happened to me yesterday. I went to the same gas station mentioned here and a younger looking guy (no rosary but rayban glasses)
was the attendant. He seemed like a nice enough guy. But when he finished filling up and I handed him the card, he pointed out the 49 LITERS he put
in before going to charge my card for the 340 pesos that the pump showed. He came back with a receipt for 490 pesos. Thanks to this particular thread,
I had checked the peso total on the pump and was able to point out to the guy that he had charged me in litros not pesos. He seemed very apologetic at
having been caught. He gave me back the difference in cash.
Anyways...any of ustedes who use tarjetas, be alert

I never get screwed at the gasolineras. Here is my method. When I pull up to the pump I get out and tell the attendant:
"Estoy viendo usted y no mí chingas con la cuenta."
Works every time. You just have to be more huevon than them.

Agreed---not just use cash, use pesos-----eliminates two potential problems.
Other than possible "bad" pumps, it has been a long time we since we have been ripped off---last time in Nogales, got distracted and our vehicle took
about 10 gallons more than it held.

Exactly who was adding on the credit card surcharge, Pemex? I have been charged a 3% surcharge by hotels and other types of businesses too. Come to
find out, now Visa and Mastercharge tack on 3% on all foreign charges. That means 6% in surcharges. Now I just get cash at ATMs. That works out to be
the most practical. Just be aware of your surroundings like you would anywhere in the world, when carrying cash.
I always pay cash at Pemex stations, in pesos....and I stand right there and watch them like a hawk. The only thing I haven't been able to avoid la
chinga is when the pump meter is running and when I drive out, the tank doesn't show 'full'. That happened three years ago, but not recently.

Do those guys that pump the gas expect a tip? How much is customary? Are they employees of the gas station or simply working for tips? The reason I
ask is I tipped all the way down to Mulege last May (nothing exorbitant..) and an adult female that I tipped looked a little embarrassed. I wondered
all the way back if I had offended her.
