IMSS Story

I am so tired of reading so many negative stories regarding issues in Mexico, so here is a good one

We finished our home in San Felipe and because I used enough sense to put the Social Security in my name, I received a document from IMSS that my builder hadn't been paying my monthly SS payments.

I met with IMSS and payed my back payments in December and they waived my penalties.

Now that we are done we applied for our Letter of Liberation and received a document that we owed about $21000.00 pesos. We went to the IMSS in Mexicali and took all of our paperwork and met with an agent. He made some comments in spanish and by the time he was done going over our plans and our receipts, we left owing about $9000.00 pesos. I was very impressed with their professionalism. Also, for those of you who are about to build a home in Mexico, make sure that the builder puts your name on the IMSS paperwork, not just their companies name. If they stop paying SS, you will be notified by mail. Also, I was told to have this docuement available for 5 years as the Mexican tax man can and sometimes does knock and your door and ask for it.

Let me try to understand this. The good news you are talking about is that you only had to pay $900 extra for the social security payments you paid to your builder which he did not pay to the IMSS?

No, sorry, I was notified early in the process that he was not paying. So, I was able to deduct that from his payment and I paid it myself. When you build a home in Mexico they have a calculation of so many pesos per sq meter. On my home it was suppose to be around $50000.00 pesos. When everything was said and done I paid far less and have my letter of liberation.
