Baja Ham Radio
Anyone else interested in amateur radio in Baja? Or have a reciprocal license? When we caravan with friends I put loaner radios in the trucks and the
drive is easier and more interesting/fun.

ED - Nastalgia and Patrick from Lopez Mateos are ham nutz and run the local net down there. They also coordinate our clinic we run with the Flying
Samaritans.
at there place there are big towers and antennas that will amaze.
so if you are down that way they are easy to find as everyone knows them, friendly fun baja people.
maybe they'll respond here and give you their frequencies. The clinic for Nov was yesterday.

Ed, you will meet lots of people on the HF nets listed on this page.
I only have a technician's license and am over here in Sonora, so no HF for me. My 2 meter/440 radios arent getting too much use over here.

Ed, been hamming in Baja for many years. We will be at our boat in La Paz around Dec. 4 until April something.. Lots of cruisers are hams and check
into the many ham cruising nets. We are volunteer examiners in La Paz...need to upgrade? I notice the AMSAT. org....we have been doing the ham
satellites from La Paz and parts of the S. Baja. We just use the Arrow antenna on a tripod. Bringing the sat gear down again this year. We also are
doing the digital modes down in BCS. Nice to have an XE call on the birds as we get lots of QSOs. Let us know when you drive down. Jack N1IY, s/v

I had a great friend and neighbor in Coyote Bay who was an avid ham radio guy for many, many years. I don't recall his call sign or numbers. His
name was Jake..a shortened Jacobson..and he broadcast every morning from his mountain home overlooking the bay below.
I remember once he was very excited about reaching Japan on a very low power. He utilized some of the old Baja telegraph wire into his antenna setup,
I believe. He would be remembered in ham radio circles, I imagine. He is certainly remembered by all of us who knew him as our old Baja friend,
Jake.

And let's not forget Chivato's man of ham...Jim Johanson AKA Mooney Base.
his "shack" was unreal! Jim did internet and email using ham as the service. he could print using ham for file downloads somehow. Cool stuff.
Jim has moved away i don't know who took his home but it is spectacular.

Pompano,
Thanks for the kind words about my departed cousin Bob "Jake" Jacobson. He was one who will never be forgotten by the early settlers of Coyote and
any and all he had contact--was one of a kind!
For many years he and I would regularly communicate via radio, he atop the hill in his Baja home me in my office in Anaheim Hills, California via a
a patch from other operators in California. Some times it was a simple "Hello how you doing?" other times it was a long conversation about our
family, Baja and the world.

Hi Sam,
It's been a while since I heard Jake's voice over the radio...and his Morse code. We would have some great conversations while I was at sea in my old
Pompano and Jake was in his moutainhome.
"Pompano, Pompano....Wino."
He was a true 'Baja character' in the old sense and I plan to write a little about him soon.
"Wino, Wino......Pompano..................................."??

For those of you who a infrequent and even thosewho are frequent travelers to or past Coyote Bay all you need do is look inland ...Perched on the
side of the hill (mountain?) you will see Bob Jacobson's home with the million dollar view of the Sea of Cortez.
An enduring tribute to one of the early settlers of the area and one of the early explorers of Baja...

How does one get a reciprocal license in Mexico? I was under the impression it was difficult.

While you may only have a tech ticket in the U.S. if you take a copy of that to the SCT either in La Paz or T.J. along with your visa and pay the
85.00 or so dollar fee you will walk away with a reciprical ticket in Mexico. The cool thing is a reciprical ticket gives you full band use while in
Mexico.
Have fun

Jim and Mary are great folks. Wonderful friends. A couple years ago Jim had treatment for throat cancer and ended up moving to Sonora where they are
much closer to Tucson. They spend their time between the two.

Is this really true????
Man, I'd be fine with just working the ham frequencies while I'm down here. I'm in Sonora. I could probably find a used HF radio down here with the
brisk turnover in boats.

I hold a full Amateur Radio license.
Im not as active as I would like to be, you know the score, not enough time nor money....or space for that matter!
When we relocate to La Paz I'll set up a shack, hopefully I'll have more time.

London calling to the faraway towns
Now that war is declared-and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls
London calling, now don't look at us
All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain't got no swing
'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing.
