Changing times in the Southland

Well, the head cold in the U.S. is now full-blown flu in Baja Sur. Lots of businesses closing, scaling down, laying people off. Not easily done in Mexico where the worker has some rights. Very glad to see one of the resorts in nearby Buena Vista sent an Email around to some local gringos asking for help for their employee – many hotel maids, cooks, gardeners were hoping for part time work with the local gringo community.

This, at a time when the big, bold super-mega East Cape resort projects are buying more ad space. Go Figure. Our hotel marina project here has split the gringo town in two; one faction wishes the thing would fall on its face and we would return to sleepylittlemexicanvillage. The other group wants mega development, legions of greedy realtors, exploding realty prices so they can cash in, find another burgeoning sleepy little settlement somewhere waiting to be discovered.

Time will tell. In the meantime the changes lead me to learn a little more Spanish yesterday. It was sudden and unexpected, dramatic. A friend, a Mexican here in the village came by to tell us she’s leaving. No work here now, got to move out. I didn’t have the words. She didn’t either. We both ended up with shoulder tears and special pats on the back, hugs. Now that I think of it, it wasn’t Spanish – maybe there’s some universal language for “I’m missing you already”, some thing I didn’t know I know.

Maybe there will be more partings like that one. I’d better brace myself. There’s no good dictionary for that kind of thing.
