San Marcos Island Yellowtail Tournament

Every year about this time the fine people at San Marcos Island along with Mike Kanzler (San Marcos Mike) put on a fantastic yellowtail tournament. While certainly not a Bisbee type tournament, it is a lot of fun and 100% of the entry money goes to a project or cause on San Marcos Island. In the past money has helped rebuild the church after a hurricane, the sports program for youth received equipment for their programs, and a couple of other worthwhile programs. Mike and others spend all year getting donations for prizes and no entry money is spent.
Last year, they had the Captain's meeting at my house in San Bruno where we collected the $30 entry fee and supplied all contestents with margaritas and cerveza. On Sunday, they have fish tacos at the island, folk dancers from Santa Rosalia, musical entertainment, a raffle, and awards.
This year the tournament will be held May 22-24th, with Captain's meeting in San Bruno on the 22, fishing on the 23 and 24th, and awards on the island on the 24th.
Be sure to put this one on your calender.

Sounds like a fun party but did anyone catch a yellowtail?

You can not believe how many yellowtail were caught and most were donated to the island who processed them and then either gave fish to deserving families or sold fish and put the proceeds in to the general fund for donation. Last year we managed to collect way over $2,500 for the church.
Bring your girlfriend down and fish this one, we all want to meet her anyway.

Is that a 62 lb yellowtail that was the winner? Got a photo of that?

Still very impressive! About 3-5 fish?

I fished out near there a few times when I stayed at the old Punta Chavato Hotel. Caught Dorado and actually hooked a marlin but it busted off because I was using a hotel trolling rod with old line.
That was a fishing tourny too and the winner was a sailfish. It was in July so it was a little hot at that time of year.

No, that is a two fish total. Biggest fish for that person weighed Saturday and then the biggest fish claimed for that person weighed Sunday.
In that neck of the woods, 30 lb fish are real trophys and to put back to back fish in two days over 30 is a real feat.

In that case it's very impressive for any neck of the woods!
