State department says don't travel to Mexico

The state department has just ordered people not to travel to Mexico unless it is essential. This is going to hurt the travel industry. What are your thoughts?

Edit: they may update the alert below due to the flu...

There is a new travel alert (as opposed to the more serious travel warning)

Travel Alert

It says be careful, not "don't go."

Unless this Swine Flu really takes off, we are still going.

I didnt see anything saying "dont go". The alert is dated 2/09 and is current as of today.

Here is what the CDC is saying. Note the suggestion near the bottom of the notice.

These fear tactics are silly. It is a serious flu, but is Tamiflu is very effective against it. So far there has been 60 confirmed deaths from swine flu in Mexico! I read somewhere that over 50,000 people were killed in auto accidents in Mexico last year! That is a travel advisory, not the flu!

From the CDC site losfrailes linked

"CDC Recommendations

CDC has NOT recommended that people avoid travel to Mexico at this time. If you are planning travel to Mexico, follow these recommendations to reduce your risk of infection and help you stay healthy."

State Department and travel to Mexico

I'm very sorry to say it but I don't trust ANYTHING coming out of WASHDC these days. If the State Department says we should avoid Mexico I'm sure they have at least five agendae working and most of them have nothing to do with health.

Anytime you are in Mexico...and especially on the mainland or in a city...you need to be careful about what you eat and drink. In Baja things are a little easier because there are fewer people and less contamination.

There are also recommendations not to travel to the USA
A friend just cancelled a trip home deciding that airplanes were not the place to be right now.....good idea, I guess.

I agree about commercial airplanes going either direction right now---not a good place.

Since we live so close to the border and there are confirmed cases in San Diego, we are still headed down Baja---seriously hope no one catches this.

The EU issued an advisory against travel to Mexico and the United States. I agree with Judy that the more compelling reason in that case is that one would have to spend hourss confined in a plane- probably not a good idea right now.

This can't be happening in Mexico without a conspiracy theory! Where are all the rumors and inuendo that the big bad USA caused this to happento Mexico. After all, the Mexican museum head who greeted Obama died from Swine Flu the very next day! Come on Mexico- get with it!

Bola, Mulege, SFelipe, Sta Rosalia, even La Paz.... probably safer than many cities in the USA (L.A.; San Antonio TX; Dallas FW Tx; S.F. CA; etc) at present time... BCS is probably the safest area of them all....

Maybe so. Safer from swine flu but more dangerous from the local swine.
