Traveling to the far south (first time)

Hey I am traveling to Cabo with my friend and we were curious on the areas that we should not stop in due to violence, We are traveling down in a old school ride so we dont think someone would rob us but we wanted to know if San Quentin or El Rosario is safe, most people have told us once you get past El Rosario that we are in the clear. true or not?

I have been to Bahia de las animas before but that is the farthest.
is there anything extra i should no about traveling down there. Are plans are to find good surf and fish and we have about a month to get to Cabo or La Paz then i fly back while my buddy takes the boat to mainland with the car.

anything helps
thanks

Actually, once you get South of Rosarito. Seems like you'll be taking your time and camping?? Ensenada has been relatively quiet. Southward, same thing. Just remember that you may encounter random violence anywhere in the world, so you should always be vigilant. Your original post was not very specific, other than the safety thing. But I'm guessing that you may actually be looking for recommendations along the way. If so, please respond, because the folks on this board are full of them.

...dont drive at night..ever!...slow around the corners in the mountains...when someone blinks their lights at you, slow down!; there's something happening just down the road...did i say "dont drive at night"???....at the checkpoints, smile big smiley faces and act goofy..works for me......treat folks with respect and humor and you'll get it right back to ya..have fun and dont be in a hurry to get anywhere

When the vehicle you are following turns on their left blinker...that's your signal to pass them.

I'm assuming you've checked rates for the ferry to the mainland. It's pretty spendy. Just wanted to make sure you're prepared for that.

Sounds like a fun trip! Have a great time!

Well, it is about 75% of the time, the other 25% they person in front of you is actually planning on making a left turn sometime soon. Always slide a little to the left to verify for yourself that the oncoming lane is truly clear & it's safe to pass!

Not sure about other areas of the Peninsula, but in La Paz, you can also get USD from ATMs....but you don't want to do it!! The exchange rate in reverse is terrible & there is a different fee structure...if you do ever get USD, it'll most likely be a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence!:bounce:

Be sure to turn right at San Ignacio if only just to drive to the Mission and snap a few pictures. It's worth an overnight though!

The laid back atmosphere there is intoxicating! Sitting on a bench under those big trees on a hot day is...............just try it!

Re: The ferry. Hope you know that unlike Baja, you'll need a vehicle permit to bring your ride onto the mainland.

I drive a pimped out Jeep Rubicon, and I speak fluent Spanish and I wouldn't drive the Jeep there alone - ever. U2U me and I'll tell you exactly why.

If I was driving to Cabo, I'd get an old, stock 4Runner and enjoy myself. I wouldn't worry about stopping and checking things out - even in Tijuana. Watch out for that Blvd. 2000 after dark. I wouldn't travel at night because you don't know who or what is lurking, but during the day, no problem.

Enjoy yourself!!

Udo- I've never seen the square so empty. When were those photos taken? Seems like every time we've been there, a fiesta was going on.

That's not entirely true as some ATMs do offer dollars but not exactly certain why....:light:
