Suicide by Cacti or Hari-Kari Caracol

My neighbor said I could use beer to eradicate snails in my gardens. Entonces, I put out several containers with the brew thinking this was safe and humane. I did find several that partook of the brew. My theory on the two in the photo is the were hung over became depressed and committed the ultimate---"Snailiside"

Thanks Nena, he is a handsome little devil, isn't he? I have got to get a life. I am having withdrawal symptoms, I need to get in some salt water soon. It has even led to photographing garden snails.

Wish my snails would commit snailicide. I'm a gardener.... but now that I've seen that tiny snail face close up, I'll never be able to squish one again. (who woulda thought about cute little snail eyes?!)

Hope you get back into the salt water soon, Ken.

Collect snails.
Put into a container in which they can be kept moist and can breathe.
Feed them on bran or lettuce or cabbage leaves for 7 to 10 days. This cleanses them.
Put in a sieve and dunk them in boiling water for a few seconds to kill them.
Take the snails from the shells with a small fork, wash them off and then cook.
To cook about a 100 you need a pint of water, ¾ pint of cider, a large carrot and an onion cut into pieces.
Make sure the snails are covered in liquid.
Bring to the boil and simmer until tender for about an hour - it may take a little longer.
Rinse in hot water to clean off the bits of vegetables.

The snails need to be fed lettuce for 7-10 days
Meanwhile put the empty shells in a saucepan with salt and water and bring to the boil.
Boil for a few minutes then rinse in cold water.
Do this 3 times more to make sure the shells are clean.
Dry shells in the oven.

Now to the snails.
You will need a pound of butter for 100 snails.
If the butter is salty you will have no need to add any more salt to the recipe.
½ teaspoon of each of the following,
Chervil, Dill, Fennel Seed, Basil, Sage.
1 teaspoon Chives
3 teaspoons Parsley
Pinch of Cayenne Pepper.
You can use dried or fresh herbs for this.
Grind up all the herbs together and add them to the butter and mix in well.

Take a snail shell, put a little bit of the herb butter into it, then a snail and seal off the shell with more herb butter.
To serve, put the snails on a tray and put into a hot oven.
When the butter bubbles they are ready to eat.
Serve with cubes of bread to mop up the herb butter.

In theory, they're supposed to slime their way over the side of the container of beer, drink, pass out & drown, never making their way back out of the container. If they do, maybe we all should start collecting them & taking them over to BMG's for a snail feast!

Alas, I've got a prior commitment that day!:yes::yes:

Do not try this at home.

Well....maybe try it at BMG's home.

Why not boil them in the beer? Just add a little salt and garlic. Suck them outta their shells and chase em down with more beer. Oh, add a salad on the side to get the green crunch thing goin' on.:barf:

I used to wait for dad to come home from work every day to go collect snails in a park close by. I kept them in a box. I liked to touch their eyes and watch them retreat back into their heads. Dad said I liked to race them on the kitchen table.

Mother found it all disgusting and took all of my snails and dumped them into the toilet. But things did not end there. When she came back to use it she discovered that they had climbed up and out over the sides. She found them stuck to the toilet seat and it's cover. Dad found it all very amusing but I don't remember the episode as I was under 4 at the time.

Parimutuel snail racing is very exciting. Not only can you enjoy their blazing speed during a race, but you also have time to grab a beer, order a pizza, use the restroom and take a nap at any time during the event. The only thing more exciting is snail-fighting. Nothing like watching 2 enraged snails going at it. Certainly not a sport for the squeamish.

As for eating them, that's what they were brought to this continent for. (That and racing and fighting.)
