Get them addicted early on...

I was going through my 5-year olds copious kindergarten school work and came across this gem. According to him, the assignment was to write the name of a place you like to go. No prompting needed. :tumble:

Love it! Last December at dinner in Loreto, my five year-old grandson looked across the table and said, "Everyday in Mexico is a thumbs-up day!" What is it about Baja that appeals so greatly to our younguns?

Baja is easier to spell:lol::lol::lol:

As Aldous Huxley observed, children's doors of perception haven't closed yet. Growing up and surviving to and through adulthood forces most people to narrow their focus, but kids still have the ability to just take it all in. They experience life more richly than we do, even if you think they're not appreciating it, and they are more capable of totally immersing themselves in something without rationalizing or overanalyzing it. (Example -- anyone here recently spend two hours pretending to be ancient warriors fighting to the death on a battlefield of windswept sand dunes? No? Me either. I was reading a book.) I can still remember images, sounds, and smells from my childhood (and when I occasionally stumble on one happening now in real time, it's a real jolt of deja vu), but I'll be damned if I can recall what I had for lunch on Wednesday. So for kids, the freedom to explore and discover a foreign and starkly beautiful landscape is exhilarating, and addictive. That's the kind of addiction I encourage.

Has it been five years?????

That is SOOOOOO precious...but the fact that it has been five years is disturbing to me somehow...where did the time go? My love to Mermalada, the Orange One.

All of that, and the way they are treated in Mexico...not just Baja.

My grandson who just turned 5 this month has been to Mexico 7 times, mostly Loreto, but also Rosarito where he discovered sand as a safe place to fall.

He thinks that all airplanes go to Mexico, and has more than once packed his suitcase and placed it at the front door, telling his mother that he was going to the airport to go to Mexico to visit Nana.

I think that children love Mexico because Mexicans love children. Kids are treated as a normal part of the landscape and a part of the community. In the US they are too often treated as an annoyance.

Awesome observations and pictures! I have to agree that Baja is like a petri dish for the imagination. My little guy can and does play for hours in the sand with found objects: rope, rebar, clam shells. And it's a treat to observe and be invited into this world.

Keep the great posting coming! :spingrin:

That is just way cool, make them memories for them last forever, it is by far a different World in Mexico, some very untouched areas they can see and remember.

I just got back from a quick trip to La Paz today. My seat-mates on the flight back were two boys about 11-13. They were coming back from a Memorial Day week-end with their extended familes.

They were so excited to tell me about their adventures. They fished on a friend's boat, they saw sea lions and they REALLY like the food at Rancho Viejo. Oh, and did I know that puffer fish squirted something out of their spines?
