Memorial Day Salute to all-
While Memorial Day is generally considered a day to honor those who have dies in service to their country, I'd like to extend a salute and thank you
to all the living military service members also (whether you are active or retired).
Your service to your country, which ever country that may be, is genuinely appreciated. It is with your service that we all enjoy the relative peace,
freedoms and safety of Canada, America, and most parts of Mexico.
SALUTE!
PS-If anyone doesn't agree with this post or wants to post anti-servicemember sentiments, go start your own post!

This would be a bad day for anybody to disagree with your sentiments. I want to be here if they do.
Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm ready for my 3pm musical military tribute and salute! I'm sure my neigbors won't minds the outside speakers being a little loud.

We actually have two days on our calendar that are specifically reserved for remembering and honoring our armed forces. And each of them today
represents something a little different from their initial concept. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, established after the Civil
War as a day of remembrance where people were encouraged to "decorate" the grave stones of fallen Union soldiers. It wasn't until the mid-20th century
that the day became Memorial Day to honor all of the fallen in service to our country.
Similarly November 11, originally called Armistice Day was designated to observe what was then considered the the day marking the end of the war to
end all wars- WWI. Of course, WWI sadly was not our last, and similar to what happened with today's holiday, Armistice Day became Veteran's Day.
Hope I didn't put anyone to sleep. I suppose y'all knew this already. But I noted a post on another thread that mentioned a recent survey that claimed
little more than one-quarter of Americans surveyed knew what Memorial Day was about.

...and you'll hear very loud military band versions of all your favorites. I doubt you'll hear mine over all the local Pt Loma war vets celebrating
in their back yards with cook-outs today though.
One of my most vivid childhood family memories was watching the Memorial Day parades- always from the exact same vantage point each year... the
marching bands, the Shriner clowns on mini-motorcycles, the war heroes riding the route in vintage convertible cars... (OK- they are vintage cars
NOW... lol). My Dad made sure we didn't miss one and also made sure we knew the sacrifices that were made. Enjoy the day!

Never miss an opportunity to educate our young: "Children touring Washington inspired the idea when LaSpada asked them what Memorial Day meant and
they said that's when the swimming pool opens."
I sure they won't mind me playing Taps after the moment of silence... and then my own little parade tribute...

Where I am in New Mexico, the VFW and other vets organizations will have ceremonies at 4 different locations with a parade between them, ending at the
Veteran's Memorial Park and Museum, which has the only one half size Vietnam Wall in the country. This will be on May 30th - the traditional
Decoration or Memorial Day.

Thank you so much for your posting, this to me is a very special day, I served in Viet Nam and lost several friends, and I am so blessed I came home,
but for some of my comrades who didn't , I feel this sacrifice they all have given is to be honored, and I thank you Lord for my safety.
Again thank all for your postings it really means so, so, much.

I was in the navy during nam and lucky enough to not have be in a combat zone. I too lost friends and some that came home that were never the same.
I just spent a day with an old shipmate last month that is now retired but volunteers on the USS Midway museum. It was great to see him after all
these years and get the "insiders" tour of the boat.
thanks for your service and that of your buddies

I don't know if you heard the mini-concert up there, but my Korean War vet neighbor definately enjoyed it! The mexicans on the beach just looked
confused. They are used to maraichis- but didn't know where the marching band was going to come from.

Everyone please listen to this. It is one of the best tribute songs I've ever heard.
If it does not bring a tear to your eye and make you proud to be an American nothing will

NASCAR stopped the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte today just before noon EDT.
Brought the cars to a stop, shut down all the engines, all the crews lined up along pit road, the crowd stood silent.
And gruff old Tony Steward pulled out a little American flag and waved it out the window of the #14 Chevrolet.
He told his pit crew that it was one of the most emotional and awesome moments of his entire life.
Very, very cool tribute....
