Border Question
Hi---what kind of issues/problems would I face returning from Mexico to the US with an expired US Passport? Any first hand information would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Expired would be better than nothing, I would imagine. You're sure to be scolded but, just grin and bear it. Groveling will help as well. They
love it when you ooze with guilt and remorse.

no prob at US immigration, they recognize expired passports. but if returning by air, airline may think different. if entering mex, exp PP may be
reason to deny entry

They're good for 10 years... so you waited until just before your trip to address this issue? New passports are issued withing a couple weeks now, so
no excuse... Or just get the North America Card for 1/2 the price...
Anyway, have your real, not photocopy birth certificate along... as that is valid... for the Mexican authorities and the U.S. too when they scold you
for procrastinating on the renewal.

It is a shame that you were scolded in asking your first question on Nomads----Welcome anyway.
And for what ever reason your passport has expired, even if it was one of those things where one opens it up and says, "Holy Cow, how have 10 years
passed so fast?" you should be OK--if traveling by land.
Good advice on the birth certificate---original, or a CERTIFIED COPY from the county.
Good luck and have fun no matter where you are going

mrjones doesn't say where he will be in Mexico or for how long. So, the point about getting the FM-T is interesting. I'm guessing that he would have a
greater chance of being turned back by the Mexican migra than being hassled by the US guy at the gate. From all I have read recently, there is still a
tremendous amount of scofflaws returning without passports. Obviously, they are allowed back in. The expired passport is way better than none.
