San Jose's Redone Zocalo

I hadn't seen the newly remodeled town square in San Jose until last week. In my opinion, it's not a homerun. The good news is they eliminated the uneven sidewalk that was problematic on the North end. The church sits more predominant in the view. But it just seems to be too much hardscape and not enough greenery. Then, there's the elimination of evermore parking spaces.

I see that time marches on with the local businesses, as a handsome new restaurant replaces the Ganconseco market (El Vaquero Steak House, where you can pay $50US for a steak), but that Damiana is closed until October 1. Wonder if it will reopen?

I agree about the greenery. La Plaza could use a lot more shade trees. Otherwise, I think it is done pretty nicely.

Then we agree. But I'm still not buying you a $50 steak.

Where there once were trees

Spent many an hour sitting under the wonderful trees that used to be in the square. I agree that there is not nearly enough shade.

Thanks Judy, for the pix. Unfortunately, I can't imagine anything being done to undo the work and plant more trees. But, as I mentioned earlier, overall, it looks really nice. As a local, what's your take on the "seasonal" closing of Damiana? It's an iconic restaurant, maybe not as good as it once was, but do you think they'll be back 10/1?

Looks like the goal was making it look like a Los Angeles shopping center. Very Un- Baja if you ask me. But for all you who like your lawns, even sidewalks, and the illusion created for the tourists - so it looks just like home, and not Mexico - then I guess this is the place for you. For all that you get the $50 steak too - just like home.
