4th Annual International Governors Cup Fishing tournament in Bahia Asuncion
This years Fishing Tournament is part of the Traditional Fiestas of Bahia Asuncion that take place Aug.12-16 with lots of fun events like horse, car,
dinghy, kayak races, rodeo, beach sports like volleyball, a midway for the kids, food booths, dances everynight to live bands...this year there is a
16 piece big band!!!..the dances are at the new cultural centre.
These are the new regulations for this years tournament.
-registration is at 2:00 pm under the big pine tree at the beach and costs 100 pesos for open water and 25 pesos for shore fishing
-boat fishing species are yellowtail and cabrilla, shore fishing is any species
-boats can be up to 31'
-fishing starts on sunday Aug.15 at 7:00 am and lines out of the water at 3:00 pm and wiegh in closes at 5:00 pm (shore fishing 7:00-1:00)
-each participant can present 2 fish for weigh in but participants can only win one prize each
(this year to avoid scams they will be cutting open the fish to make sure nobody puts weights in them!!!! HURRAY)
-there will be 5 prizes in both open water and shore fishing
-in the event of a tie, the first fish weighed will win
-shore fish must be brought in live with the hook in it
Prizes are as follows
1st place open water 25,000 pesos
2nd place 20,000
3rd place 15,000
4th place 10,000
5th place 5,000
Shore fishers have catagories for Children, teens & adults
1st place 7,500
2nd place 5,000
3rd place 3,000
-the governor will award the prizes at 5:00 pm (or so)
the fish weighed will be used to cook dinner for the awards ceremony party which includes music and dancing at the beer tent!
This is a really fun tournament so if you are in the neighbourhood..drop by for the festivities.
(I asked the organizers why they dont give away a boat and motor for a prize like other tournaments and they said that it is a choice they make...when
they give away a boat, there arent any other prizes so they chose to have lots of catagories to divide up the prize money so more people have a chance
to win something...nice!)

That looks like fun! So about $2000 1st prize?

Ahhh, the nebulous "cabrilla" as a target species. This could get interesting.
Shari, where would a 31 foot boat launch in Bahia Asuncion? I am unfamiliar with the area.

depends how big your huevos are Hook...no really...maybe some boat might show
up that put in somewhere else...although you could do it if it didnt have too deep a draft and put in at high tide by the coop at the point. I think
the point was to limit the size of boat...some pangas are pretty big too.
I'm liking the idea of checking all the fish for trampas...or tricks like filling them with water or weights as there is always a question if the fish
was frozen before etc.

I saw a boat ramp in town when Jonesey was showing me around. Looked a little sketchy. Who uses the in town ramp?

Couple quick questions.
Will the Biosphere fees be included with the entry fees or paid separately?
Will the carnival workers have to pay for bracelets?
How about the big band?
Who will be responsible for all the clean up? The tournament sponsers or the Biosphere workers?
Just wondering how all that works.
Thanks.

Here ya go---two boats being launched at last years tournament.
Seriously, launching a boat at Bahia Asuncion can be difficult---ask Laurieboats. There is no easy launch ramp. But, the locals know how to do
it---

If there is one thing that town needs it's a real boat launch ramp.
There really is only a spot for launching standard pangas on the beach old school style. The tractor is a nice touch.
It would be difficult to get any decent size trailer boat down to the beach at San Roque. And even more difficult to get it back up the hill.

San Roque has a lesser grade uphill than the coop...but the coop has deeper water at high tide. It would be next to impossible to make a boat ramp
because we get big swells from many different directions...south in the summer, west in the winter which would destroy any cement structure...so it's
not economically feasable to anyone here to make one as it would likely get trashed within a year....such is life

Is the coop launch the one in town? It does look a little step.
It would take two trucks and a winch the pull decent boat back up.
San Roque is shallow and rocks too.
Okay for pangas but I'm not sure a bigger boat can do it.
