Loreto Airport, Timeshare salesmen and the extended Malecon
hi everyone,
Re the new airport: I had a conversation with the Engineer that is in town to re-wire the airport equipment for Air Alaska. He said he would be
working here about six weeks.
Re the Malecon: Yes, I am afraid that they ARE working on the land south of Loreto Shores... and not just a new Malecon, but many new roads that head
up from the Sea, including pipes and services... looks like house lots to me.
Re the Time-Share guys: I had one of them come into my office a couple of months back, and introduce himself as my good friend (never met him before).
When I asked him what he wanted he told me that he needed my help - and when prodded to be more specific, he said that he needed me to watch his
company's presentation, so that they would pay him 200 bucks. When I told him that I had no intention of buying under any circumstances, he said - yes
I know, but they will pay me 200 bucks if you go. At that point I asked him pointedly what reason he could think of that I shouldn't call his boss
(whom I DO know) and report his attempt at defrauding his company... then I told him not so politely to leave my office.
I try to remember to warn my incoming guests about these guys... and have had MANY negative comments about their agressive behaviour.
And YES, Pam, as a business person I object to the fact that they have been given the concession at the airport to harrass our visitors - what can we
do about it?

I've got some bad news for you. The timeshare guy told you about the same as they all do. on the other side of the coin, there are veterans of these
wars (tourists) who porposely sign up for the presentations with no interest in buying whatsoever. They go for the premiums, whether it's rental cars,
snorkel trips, Etc. So the people running the time share presentations consider it all part of the cost of doing business. They feel that as long as
someone shows up for the presentation, they at least have a chance for a sale. If no one shows, no sale. If you've never sat through one of these, it
can become very tedious, as the sales people pull out all the stops. I don't know if there are any accurate statistics available, but it would
probably be surprising how many sales are made to people who had no intention of buying when they arrived; whether they were just feeling sorry for
the guy who set them up or not.
As for the airport, you had better get used to it. It is prevalent through Mexico's airports. The time share people pay big bucks for the space. Back
before they privatized the airports, there may have been a possibility of shutting them down. But, now with private ownership of the airports, money
talks.

WHO does own the Loreto Airport ? new / old . . . ?
I assumed that it was owned by the municipality or the state, or possibly a local airport authority.... but then I never gave it much thought
(obviously...)
Thx.

The project south of town seems to have come to a near standstill. Last week there were hundreds of truckloads per day going in and out of the
worksite. This week its down to dozens of trucks, maybe less. Heard rumors of lawsuits being filed by environmental concerns, no idea if thats true
or not, but the drastic slowdown is fact.

What is the Oasis Hotel doing about this extension
I did not see any new plans for a "drive thru" in their patio bar...

I know they are extending the Malecon, but I have been puzzled as to how they are going to connect it with the main section in town. Does anyone know
if they are planning to put a bridge over the arroyo? And will they build it in front of Loreto Shores? The long range plans for the town also show
the Malecon going north of town way past Costa Loreto.

Dan........No such luck. They have been moving less dirt and fill through Colonia Zaragosa over the last couple of weeks, but the work crews are hard
at work laying sewer lines along the streets they have laid out. I talked to a Fonatur construction supervisor this morning and he thinks that the
project will be moving forward as planned.

Apparently FONATUR didn't have the proper environmental permits to do the work and they were destroying mangroves, etc. The local environmental
groups (don't remember which one or ones) alerted the authorities and they stopped the work. Also, I did read that the project has been scaled back
due to lack of funds. I read that the work that is continuing is mainly for sidewalks and development for building lots. Does anyone else have more
information?
FONATUR seems to think the rules don't apply to them. I'm glad to see that they are finally being held accountable.

I happened to be watching a travel show last night on NPR from Portland Oregon. Right at the end they ran an add for an "Eco Friendly Development in
Loreto Bay".
It sounds like someone is still spending money on advertisements.
