Rocky Point the easy way
A new toll road has just opened between SLRC and the checkpoint at El Doctor. It starts from Mex 2 east of town across from the new commercial POE
(set to open in November) and runs 47 Ks bypassing all the ejidos in the ag valley. The cuota is a bit of a bite at 94 pesos but it does cut half an
hour off the run to El Golfo. The 112 Ks from El Doctor to El Golfo has been resurfaced. Then from El Golfo to Pto. Peņasco is 143 Ks of the new
Costero highway. They are also finishing up a new wide boulevard at the entrance to El Golfo.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

I'm guessing that means much more growth is ahead for Rocky Point. Not all that long ago, Rocky Point and San Felipe were more or less mirror images
of sleepy fishing towns. One decided to go for it; the other not. Geez- A Mayan Palace at Rocky Point? Those are pretty savvy people.

you should see the new int'l jetport the Mayan Palace people just built east of town 10 miles. right close to their golf/time share/ hotel resort
complex.
it is huge! all concrete built to airline standards.
i'll get some pix up.
the old one in town is set to close. Everyone will have to use the new facility. royal pain for guys with homes on Sandy Beach that fly down.

Love the terminal! Is that runway long enough for a 737?

Apparently I'm not the only one who feels the new cuota is too high. The merchants of El Golfo have formed a group to complain to the governor. They
think it will hurt not help tourism. At almost 200 pesos round trip just to shave off an hour, they think most people will stick to the old road.
They want the fee lowered and if it isn't they are threatening a blockade.

no - much longer, i don't have the figure handy but expect a minimum of 8,000 due to density altitudes effect with summer heat. it is at least as
long as Loreto's or Mexicali's. Hermisillo, Guaymas etc.
the picture is deceiving - it is longer than it looks.

I kinda figured it was longer than it looked in the picture. Perspective can be tricky. That said, given the current level of development, combined
with the current airline financial situation, I would imagine that nothing larger than regional jets will be landing there anytime soon.

From 'AIR BAJA!' 1998 by Galen Hanselman (and to compare: 'Airports of Baja' 1987 by Arnold Senterfitt):
Mexicali: 8,530' (8,531')
San Felipe: 4,900' (5,171')
Loreto: 7,200' (7,610')
La Paz: 8,200' (8,282')
Los Cabos: 7,200' (7,515')
Guaymas, Son.: (7,650')
Punta Peņasco, Son.: (5,043')

Pay attention... we were talking to each other about runways for jet planes at sea level locations in the area... It is a list to compare.
Specificly, I was responding to this post my Mike:
"no - much longer, i don't have the figure handy but expect a minimum of 8,000 due to density altitudes effect with summer heat. it is at least as
long as Loreto's or Mexicali's. Hermisillo, Guaymas etc.

Only Mexicali and La Paz are/ were over 8,000 ft. when those 2 books were written.

It opened today! I have a friend that has a timeshare so we are going in December to that Mayan Resort. Looking at pics online it looks like there are
LOTS of BIG hotels in town. I thought it was like San Felipe? With that airport I think I'll be getting down there just in time!

Roger that, Mike. Presently, the Mayan folks have contracted with a shuttle service (Kona Shuttle) that runs from Phoenix-Sky Harbor to their
property. They are offering free one-way to passngers who commit to paying $100 for the return trip. Mayan must be subsidizing this, because the vans
are not that large and the equivalent of $50 per person each way is a deal for the passenger.

you WILL see some air taxi services fairly soon but on like C 400 class of equipment, 8 seat biz twins, out of PHX and TUS. The Mayan Palace ownership
people who funded the airport and some others are working on that now. but that is not airlines with connections.
so - those with the $$ that want to go to RP and hate the 4 hour drive will have a reasonable alternative - at least to them.
