La Mision Rescue Angel:
Susan Baldwin Braves the Outback

No one seems to really know whether the tiny town of La Mision, which lies somewhere south of Rosarito and north of Ensenada, is actually part of
Rosarito or Ensenada.
The actual town self is just a mile or so down the road from a bend in the road featuring a few well known restaurants popular with tourists.
La Mision is a community of just a few small ranches and homes, situated in a valley and nestled under the shadow of a huge expanse of volcanic rock.
A local cafe features a hitching post.
Just about a half mile down a dirt road, is a small log cabin that Susan Baldwin, a holistic medicine practitioner, shares with her family of about 50
rescued dogs.
It is easy to see why Susan fell in love with this area; her home looks out over a peaceful landscape of fields and small ranches. However, since
Susan began to take on the responsibility of rescuing the areas homeless pets, the location has been anything but peaceful.
Victimized by neighbors who donīt agree that someone should attempt to care for their neighborhoods homeless pets, Susan has had to stand her ground
in some very tough battles to protect her animals and property from vandalism and threats.
A very soft spoken and rather gentle person, Susan has demonstrated that she is definitively a woman of courage.
In a situation where many would just give up, Susan has singlehandedly preserved and managed to provide a home for these dogs and struggles daily to
feed and care for them.
La Mission has no regular spay & neuter programs, like the City of Rosarito of Tijuana. Susanīs location puts her out of range of the two major
Rosarito (GSL) and Tijuana (HSTJ) homeless pet organizations and clinics. She is also miles out of the way of the ever growing Northern Baja pet
rescue network.
Nonetheless, Susan manages to co-ordinate with a few other rescuers and obtain food and treatments for her dogs.
Transportation to the Rosarito and Tijuana sterilization clinics is a problem.
Her yard, about 3 acres, is always clean and the dogs appear to be happy. Recently, Elia Campillo from Rosaritos Ecology Group, visited Susanīs home
and shelter and found it to be in good condition.
Rescue Angels is highlighting Susan Baldwin this month because her location and its remoteness put her high on the list people who need help the most.
Susan had a career practicing holistic medicine, and uses holistic treatments for her rescued pets, when possible.
Her Basic needs include: dog food, supplies, such as bowls, cleaning items, etc. and help with transportation to the sterilization clinics.
