Loreto Longliner

As Tripui was burning down that Saturday, a Mexican longliner slipped into the park waters. I am happy to report that the Mexican Navy went out and arrested the skipper and crew and impunded his boat. Along with tons of dorado attached to his hooks he had about forty tortugas. The park service was going to go out but needed to ask one of the fishing companies for gasoline as they are out of money. I am happy to see that they are taking this seriously---however, alot of damage had already been done by the longline. This sends the kind of message that is needed to the commercial fishing fleet. I understand that they were from Guaymas. As for the fishing in Loreto right now--it is a wide open bite so you all ought to get down there if you can. Remember, you can only take two per day per license (of Dorados).

Dorado

Thanks for the heads up Sharky. You forgot to mention the reason for the limit of 2 on Dorado. For the unititiated, the daily limit for most species is 5 but billfish and Dorado are limited to 2 per day. (not including catch and release)

Longliner

Good news that they enforced the laws.

Bad news that the park rangers have no fuel to do thier job?

They will

things are changing down here pretty quick. Gas for the rangers boats will be one of the first things.
Unfortunately, many of these boats are personal craft. Perhaps those of you who care could do something along the lines of getting some of that Escalara Nautica $$ to go for a police force to enforce the rules and regulations.:light:
It will certainly be needed when all those new boaters are here!

I am the owner of the company who donated...

that fuel.. they approached me on the beach as I was coordinating a wild party on Isla Coronado complete with live music... I thought I was being busted for tossing the fiesta without a fiesta permit (it was laid on me on very short notice)...I had marine park tickets for all.. the "guarda parque" boat landed on the beach with three armed marines.. they asked for 50 liters of fuel which I gladly donated... the only problem I saw and mentioned was the fact that they had a two stroke outboard and we had four strokes... but they were ready with a liter of two stroke outboard oil. My captains Martin, Chanto, Fidel, Gabriel, and Antonio radioed in the longliner pangas that were part of a mothership... the one that was held custody and moved to La Paz.

Sharky- you know me and you know it was me who gave them the petrol, should give credit where it is due- I and my company stand behind conservationism to the fullest.

Pam

Yes, I knew it was you that gave them the gas. I did not say anything as I wasn't sure you would want that put on the net. Yes, folks, I talked with Pam and knew she donated the gas. And, yes, folks, she is behind conservation and encourages releasing fish. She is very active with fly fishing as well and conventional fishing. She is helping the local independent pangeros by finding work for them through her business. She is also recouperating from a bruised ligament on right foot and is using crutches to get around. Her two children are growing up faster than you can imagine. She is well though of in Loreto and I consider her a friend and a good friend to Loreto. She is one of those rare gringos that can get by competeting with the mexicans by running a good shop and doing community service. "nuff said. Sharky

Question for Pam or Juan

Juan you stated that there is a 2 fish Limit.

Is that limit for the Park Reserve Waters:

Pam do you Know?

Juan , have you changed your Life and started going fishing?

Is the 2 fish limit also being enforced outside of the Limits of the Reserve?

Is the Panga Capt. allowed to also bring Home a 2 fish Limit?

Two fish limit

Skeet---I believe the Mexican Fishing License allows for two dorado per license per day. As far as I know the Pangero can bring in two also as long as he has a license. I am not sure as to the reason, but suspect it has to do with the dorado being a sportfish. After all, two per person per day in not unreasonable. You can bring in one Sailfish or Marlin in per day (if you are so inclined). California fishing rules and limits are much more restrictive than Mexicos. I fish for the sport of it and not so much for the amount of fish. But, as you know, I am older now and wiser. If I can't eat it down there and share it with my neighbors in Mexico, I really have no use for it. Bringing it home to the U.S. is not something I generally do. Dorado, especially, is better eaten on the day it is caught. Sharky;)

Fish limits

JR and Skeet - I can't give you a quote for the information right now but I am pretty careful about staying within the law no matter where I am. My understanding is that food fish are limited to 5 per license holder. That would include cabrilla, snapper, etc. The bill fish and Dorado (probably others also but I don't know) are considered sport fish and are limited to two per day. I believe this is the law in Mexico, not just the Baja peninsula. If I am wrong Pam can correct me. The Mexican laws are actually pretty much the same as the Washington state laws used to be. No longer that way. Bottom fishing is almost a thing of the past if you don't know where to go.

Skeet - I haven't been out for awhile but the clams and oysters in front of my porch keep be busy. As you know my son brings me all the crab, shrimp and salmon I need so I don't need to waste the gas anymore. There are some benefits to getting older and I intend to enjoy all of them.

Will pay Taxes on the last piece of Property in Loreto. Anyone interested it is a 10 Mtr. by 30Mtr, about a block off the Beach out North. would make a good set up for a two story palapa with parking beneath. Will make a good deal to a person Respectful of Loreto and its People.
