UPDATE: San Diego - Trolley / Greyhound - San Ysidro & TJ to LTO bus

In the event I don't doa vehicle delivery, or am offerred a ride share :

I'm considering flying into SanDiego 3/26 evening, and then bussing TJ to Loreto...

Is there still a Greyhound from SD to the TJ bus terminal?

Where does one catch it?

Hours of operation / frequency?

Cost?

and also

WHERE in San Diego does one catch the Trolley to the San Ysidro border crossing? Best way to get to it from the SAN airport...?

How often (and how late) does it run?

What is the cost?

The ABC Autotransportes web site is funky.... What is the TJ to LTO departure schedule ?

Looks like I could get into San Diego about 6:40 pm. Is there still time to get to the TJ bus terminal and catch a late bus to LTO ?

Or.... is it best to overnight in SD or TJ (and any recommendations for basic economy sleeps).

It has been quite a while since I did this route.... I've done LTO to LaPaz, TS, etc. but not the northern route in a long time...

Thx. a ton !

I just researched this for a friend.
From the airport:
Taxi to the closest Trolley stop and then to the border, walk across and taxi to the ABC central bus station in TJ
OR
Taxi to the downtown San Diego Greyhound station. Ride the Greyhound to the ABC central bus station in TJ.

You can take the city bus to the trolley station.

Re: The Trolley. You can take it anywhere from Old Town, through downtown (on C Street, then Park, to Imperial). You want the Blue Line to get you to the border. One way is pretty cheap. Buena Suerte.

Research !!

Ok, I have a better connection for internet research today...

I managed to get some answers... I'll share for the links and info w/ those of you who may need this in the future:

Hours of operation / frequency / Schedule and Cost (book your ticket online easily.... significant discounts for 7 and 14 day advance purchase :

Greyhound SD to TJ Tickets

Just enter San Diego for Departure Location and Tijuana Central Bus Term. MX for Arrival Location - You can select your times

I shopped a RT (so I'd have my plan for return from the TJ Bus terminal to SAN Airport... and it was 15.50 Round Trip for a 21 Day advance purchase

So.... if you have lead time to plan and book ahead ~ the Greyhound direct to the TJ Central Bus Terminal is probably the most convenient and very affordable.

SD to SY Blue Line Trolley Info:

Trolley Map & Schedules

One-Way Trolley Tickets, available for $2.50 from ticket vending machines, are good for travel for two hours from the time of purchase on any MTS Trolley. Transfers between Trolleys are allowed to complete your one-way trip.

Trolley Fare Info

The ABC Autotransportes web site is funky.... What is the TJ to LTO departure schedule ?

I'm still working on this piece.... Their web site is really bad :o but it looks like there are busses leaving later into the night... I'll post an update. Might have to call them, eh?

I did the SD to Loreto bus route a couple of years ago.

There is a city bus, route #992, that will pick you up at the airport, with stops at both terminals, and take you downtown, across the street from the Greyhound terminal. About every 15 minutes.

Then I took a Greyhound bus to the TJ bus station, about $7 fare then.

Don Alley has the plan. The Greyhound bus station is at 2nd and Broadway. There is a bus to TJ about every 1/2 hr. The bus will take you straight through (with a stop for inspection - might get red light in which case they will check all luggage), to the airport/central bus station.

One cautionary note: the bus that you want that will take you all the way to Loreto may not be departing at a convenient time when you arrive after taking Greyhound to get the to bus station. But you can take any bus heading south and then hook up to Loreto on a transfer if you don't want to wait for a bus to Loreto. Comprende? (like maybe the best you can do at the time you finally get to the bus station is a bus to Guerrero Negro). Also, be mindful of the anticipated arrival time in Loreto. Normally, it's about a 24-hr. ride direct - but with bridges out, and the possibility of a transfer, you don't want to arrive at 1 am.
If you are flexible and prepared to wait for all the various legs of the journey, you'll be fine.

And if you want to skip the Greyhound (wait time) and just get on the trolley after the 992 bus at the airport to downtown, you can use your bus ticket (no need for a second trolley ticket), and as mentioned above, then take a taxi at the border to the bus station. The taxi should be about $10. And if you need to get a tourist visa, you can take care of that too before you find a taxi.

"Or.... is it best to overnight in SD or TJ (and any recommendations for basic economy sleeps)."

If it works out this way I have stayed at Motel Diaz in TJ for around $20 per night. It's simple and it's right on the edge of the Zona Norte so if your'e timid it may not be for you but I find it clean and safe. Of course if you arenot timid it could be the most fun night of your trip

Muchas Gracias

Don ~ for the tip on the #992 Bus (how's that yellowtail BBQ'ing up ?? ;D )

Wilderone ~ for the schedule / route thoughts and alternate route to TJ ~ which might come in handy... Depending on WHEN the evening / night bus departs TJ for the S. That is the difficult thaaang right now... the ABC web site says "no departures for that destination at this time" or something close in Espanol...

alafrontera and Dennis for the lodging tips as well . . . I hope to not have to spend the night in either SD or TJ, but I do need a back up / contingency plan.

and other nomads for the help !

Now to find that schedule for southbound buses from TJ !!

Any ideas for that ?

Thx.

More discovery:

I finally figured out WHY I couldn't bring up the ABC or Aguila Bus schedules.....

You must enter your departure and arrival cities and dates... but if you enter a date more than a few days in advance you won't get options.... Since I am interested in a TJ to LTO bus on Friday, May 26, I tried entering this next Friday.... and voila...

ABC has busses (going far enough for Loreto) at:

Dep 12:15 / Arr 06:20
Dep 16:00 / Arr 11:35
Dep 18:00 / Arr 12:55

Aguila has busses to LTO :

Dep 08:00 / Arr 03:08
Dep 21:00 / Arr 15:13 (ie: 9 pm Dep / Arr Lto 3:13 PM)

So.... that 21:00 Dep might work for me if I can get from SAN to the TJ Central Bus Term in time.... (I arrive in SAN at 6:37 PM.... carry on only.... go go go to the border and the TJ Bus Terminal :-).

I hope some of this info might be valuable to other Nomads.
