Mexical American relationship concerns
Need Feed back, Please!
We love Baja and love the people, We spent last winter in Baja and are planning on spending the winter in Los Barriles (Nov to April) but are getting
really concerned about the stability of the Mexican - American relationship. I’m reading articles that say the banks (Bancomer for one) are requiring
FM3’s and passports to accept American money. Is this true? If so, we can’t expect to survive and do business having only a simple FMT or whatever
it’s called today.
Additionally the travel concerns that arise from the on-going rape of the America travelers in Ciudad Constitucion on a daily basis has us worried.
Is this attitude going to spread throughout Baja? Is this the Mexican payback for the Arizona situation? Hmmmmm.
I was under the impression that the Mexican economy has gone to hell in a hand cart and they are in dire need of the tourist dollar. But with the
latest data it doesn’t seem to hold up that theory. It has gotten so bad that we’re considering spending the winter camped out on a side street in
East Los Angeles, at least there you don’t have to wonder when you will get robbed.
We are considering cancelling our reservations in Los Barriles but would appreciate your feed back before doing so.

First things first, you can get by just fine with an ATM while you are down here. No need to visit any banks.
Now, about those daily rapes of Americans traveling through Ciudad Constitucion. Where on Earth did that come from? Do you have sources? If so, please
share them with us, I'm sure there are lots of us who would appreciate that. I live in La Paz and have heard no such thing. What IS going on in CC is
the local police have decided to use tourists as a revolving dollar account, inventing bogus reasons to pull them over to take $50 out of their
wallets or purses. Nothing else.
About your idea of sleeping on a street in East LA. That sounds like an adventure. Why don't you do that and report back to us, troll?

What type of business do plan on while on vacation? If it's day to day living, use the ATMs.
I live here comfortably with no Mexican bank account.

The extortion in CC has nothing to do with what's happening in Arizona. It's a case of a cultural trait gone berserk. The police know full well it
will be stopped, probably sooner than later, and they're milking the situation double time.
Additionally, I don't think the Mexican driver is immune from this robbery.

Easy money is...well...easy. These cops arn't directly involved with the tourist industry. Most Mexicans in Baja arn't directly involved with the
tourist industry. Your comfort is their last concern

Don't know why you would do that. We arn't living under siege and neither will you and your family.
Then again, the public plunge in South Central might be fun around August.
I could have avoided this long drawn out diatribe had I first read Bajatripper's post above. Oh, well....

So much for Peace, Love and Fish Tacos... eh? The Mexican banks are making it hard to convert cash dollars to pesos in an effort to stifle money
laundering, that's all. Baja Norte is still somewhat violent, but it always was and always will be... so long as no tourists are caught up in the
violence it does not get reported in the USA as it is considered "local interest". The CC shakedowns are a current nomad sore-spot and quite a
different matter- there is another active thread dedicated to it. With the peso hovering around 13:1, everything in Mexico is basically 30% off
right now... so just come on down and get your share.

Another casualty of the US media, it seems to me. If you are that afraid, go ahead and stay in your home and leave all the Baja hospitality to those
of us that appreciate it.
Spending any amount of time in Baja is dictated by your attitude. If you come in with an open mind and heart, you will get that back tenfold. If you
come in with a chip on your shoulder about how you SHOULD be treated, or with fear in your eyes, you will get THAT back as well.
Not to say that bad things don't happen to good people. I'm not that naive. However, I find that bad things can happen anywhere...including your own
home. You can chose to live life, or wait to die.
Viva Mexico!

Henshaw,
I believe that your first driving trip was last year. You did that trip in-spite of all the negative stuff. It hasn't changed that much, the post
about CC is just a heads up. It's been going on for a long time. Have them take you to the police station so the rest of us can slip-by when They're
dealing with you
Enjoy all that Baja has to offer, leave all the know it all's to know it all and not live it. Some of the people that post here haven't been to Baja
for as much as a day trip in years. They post like they live there.Good news doesn't go anywhere, bad news makes the best stories and post. Go have a
great time and keep your head around you and you'll be fine.

wow ..... so....we live her 365 days out of the year and we feel no danger. anytime. anywhere. we do a lot of traveling (Vizcaino, G Negro, San
Ignacio and further south to La Paz - we even took the train to Copper Canyon 3 weeks ago) and so far, life is good. life is great. no worries. Drive
safe, during the daytime, follow common sense rules and you should be fine.

That might be a little too rosey. None of my Mexican family and neighbors feel THAT safe these days to be bragging about it. A lull in the action in
your area is not really safety, but like Nana Roseanne Roseannadana once said "It's always something!" Always anticipate possible problems and you'll
be steps ahead of the bad guys.

Don't be so quick to jump on the US just to try to make a buck off some gringo who happens to fall into your tailer park, Irenie. How about working on
that honesty factor, so perhaps, just maybe, every once in awhile Bajanomads can get the mero, mero truth?

Great news about my US Bancomer COMPAS account. I no longer pay fees to use Bancomer ATM machines in Mexico. I just keep a balance of 2K in the US
Bancomer account and I can take out all the pesos I want. My main branch is at the Plaza Las Americas in San Ysidro next to Baja Duty Free where I get
my booze and smokes. I love Mexico! I highly recomend all Gringos living in Mexico dump B of A. Now we can truly leave all those Stateside games up
north.

East L. A. NOW, that's just DUMB !
And, Certainly not original having been voiced as a retort to the "Danger in Mexico" queries many times before.
WHO the F would be considering a vacation in East L. A. ? I can picture that conversation.
"Well, I'm worried about the [Whatever] in Foreign Countries ".
"Yeah, just think what it would be like if you went to some U.S. Ghetto Sh-thole" !
"Oh Well, that makes sense. I was thinking about East L. A., Harlem or South Philly, but Now, I'll go to Mexico ".

I know this isn't the political section of Bajanomads, but just to answer henshaw's question:
If the marooons in Washington would just explain to the average Joe Mexican Citizen that the US is not against Mexicans, but they are against ILLEGAL
MEXICANS, things would be much better. But, to politicize the Arizona Law, Washington prefers having the Mexicans think what they are presently
thinking.
