recycling

At Posada Concepcion, south of Mulege, members of our small community are trying to organize internal recycling programs for plastic, aluminum, tin, batteries, and more. Altho it doesn't seem that much recycling is happening in Mulege, we've found an English-speaking Mexican there who buys various metals, and he has a crusher and is willing to accept other materials. Seems he has a market up north that buys what he can haul up there.

Some Posadans are also discussing possible experiments for composting food waste, and we're developing a water-conservation program that includes identifying leaks in our water system, fixing faulty toilets, and encouraging folks to capture water normally wasted in the shower, doing dishes, etc for use on outdoor plants.

i wonder what others around the Baja may be doing to recycle materials that otherwise end up in the lovely roadside dumps up and down the peninsula. wd love to hear about yr efforts as well as any local/regional resources or buyers of/markets for recycled materials you may know of. ...

In San Bruno, we have a wonderful recycling program that is working beyond what one would normally expect. Most of the beer sold is packaged in aluminum cans which get thrown everywhere when they are emptied of their content of beer. People who need a little cash for more beer can be seen every morning walking around town and out on the main highway (getting great exercise) and collecting the aluminum cans which they trade for cash (to probably buy more beer). So not only are we keeping the highways and biways very clean, but it seems to be very close to a perpetual machine which at the present level of usage seems unlikely to ever run dry.

My husband set up a huge pila where the shower water automatically is funneled and I use a pump 2 times a week to water over 100 plants that I have ... it has been working wonderfully.

I am VERY interested in cooperating with any recycling efforts - we are remote and it will be a challenge but I am so committed to making this happen. What specific other stuff does the Mexican recycler accept ??

There is a gentleman in G Negro who is doing a fantastic job of getting businesses to cooperate and recycle - he also showed me a bio degradable plastic bag - it is very thin but they say it is biodegradable. Made for ISSSTE. The guys name is Jorge Cachu Ruiz 615 104-1882. What he is doing is absolutely amazing.

There is a loud crinkly new foil chip bag that is 100% biodegradable (if I remember correctly), which I just saw for the 1st time in San Diego. It'd be great if we could all get together and write the chip companies to see if we can get all potato nacho tortilla chips packaged this way :)

My beef is that we do not have a proper landfill (relleno sanitario). If anyone can help me get the permits for this ... wow .... I wd be so grateful.

Here is my website showing the cleanup project:

Do you think you could get the "English-speaking Mexican" to also pick up in the town of Mulege? I am not there now but would be willing to organize it for the town next winter when I return. I know I could get the cooperation of The Orchard residents, and I would work on the rest of the river communities. Perhaps The Rotary could help organize in town. (?) :light:
