What did you leave behind or forget to bring....
...on your 1st trip to Baja?
I'm starting to pack-up and recall that on our 1988 venture as far as San Felipe in a 1976 VW camper van that we should have brought some sort of
things to sit on and eat at. Thank heavens for the folks who cared enough to show us the ropes and find the great places to eat. And it sure was windy
that year - didn't think to bring the windsurfing gear!

One of the more irritating things I've forgotten was to arrive in San Diego with my Baja Trailer loaded down and suddenly realize I hadn't packed the
spare. I was really anxious to get over the line, and not about to buy a NEW wheel and tire, so the search for an appropriate used one
was...irritating. Naturally I didn't need it and now I have two.

way back in the early 80's we would just eat canned foods. we barely had a camp stove. naturally, we forgot an opener!!! but being construction guys
it only took a minute to figure out the flat screw driver and hammer trick!!!

I am so sick of forgetting things that I now have an exhaustive list of things to take to baja on a list that I print out that was made in Excel. I
check off the list items as I prepare to leave for the trip. Never forget anything anymore. Same thing when I leave the house in Baja, I use a check
list of "closing" items and things to bring back. Works like a charm and gives me complete confidence.

Muchas gracias, senor you are clairvoyant. My next question was about a getting checklist! I have milled through the older posts, but this is much
better! We have a small truck & RV this time, so will at least have a place to sit and a table to eat at. We were so naive in the old days,
thinking there would be picnic tables at the campsites. But we were motivated enough to just turn the RV south in February and drive to the tip if
Baja...except we only made it to San Felipe before we realised we neede more than 2 weeks to get back to the 49th paralell! |

The most irrating I ever forgot was this trip! My Passport! Drove from Denver and got to the CA border when I yelled "OH SH*T" out loud (and I was by
myself). Oh well, Fedex and an extra day and I was on my way.

We have an inventory list for the home here in Baja that we check before we leave to see what we need to bring back. When we first get here, we
start another list of things we think about each day along with things friends need so we do not forget.
Then there are travel lists for different travel that are checked and rechecked. Lists for the dog items. And then the list of maybe items. And if
it did not make a list, it is alwasy forgotten.
And we still forget things.

funny but since we live here full time and make it north about 3 times a year under normal circumstances, we have a list for north of the border that
starts the day we get home to Mexico and realize what we have forgotten
Now that we have mostly finished our remodeling, the list is smaller and smaller. But Les still complains every time - WE SHALL NEVER BRING BACK THIS
MUCH STUFF AGAIN !!!
he can say that all he wants ..... we still always look like those trucks piled 6 feet high
and then there was that time last year when I brought back boogie boards and surfboards and s o m e o n e didnt pack them very well ... and 3
boogie boards disappeared down highway 5 and we never even saw them go .... not even when we stopped and checked the back since people were flashing
lights at us First thing on the new list the next day ???? you got it, boogie boards !!

I didn't forget a thing. I was so paranoid I made a huge list and checked it twice -- or more. Had way too much, overloaded the truck and ended up
cracking a wheel bearing on the washboards into Scammon's lagoon.

My first trip to Baja, the problem wasn't what I forgot to take -
lord knows I took everything but the kitchen sink.
What I forgot was to take it all home again. Left my whole darn suitcase fully packed in the street in the center of La Paz! Thanks to an
exceptionally kind Paceno, my luggage arrived in Berkeley just a few weeks after I did.

Between my house in Nevada, my place in Baja and my camper to travel between the two, I have forgotten stuff all over the place. When I need something it is never in the location where I am at the moment.

It's not what I forgot to bring...it's what I forgot to throw away before leaving two weeks ago. I think I left a quart of milk in the sink. That's
going to hurt...

I camp and backpack so often, I have a list that includes everything I'd need for any trip. I cross things off the list as they are packed or not
needed. I also have a couple boxes full of stuff that always get packed (stove, cup, flashlight, fire starter, etc. and has a bag of misc.). So
often, I'll run out of something or something will break, and I'll paw around, and lo and behold - there's a couple books of matches (yeh!), or a
bottle of water (yeh!) or a corkscrew. Once I forgot my toiletry bag - all ready to go - sitting on the bed. I found a few essentials in San
Ignacio that made-do. Twice I forgot a hair brush - went to several small stores to buy one in Chiapas and Guatamala border - none!! Finally found a
cheap comb to buy. And another time when backpacking. My backpack buddy was a hairdresser, so he braided my hair with a fork.
