Mood: Pole Line Road postponed due to injury

Recreating the past

I have looked at and studied maps from David K and my vintage guidebooks of Baja California. Would it be possible or worthwhile to continue traveling along the old routes that have been diverted just for the fun of it?

Take Hwy 5 south of San Felipe for example. It is now being turned into a Super Highway, but the section that skirts the coastline is no longer in use. That section of highway provides beach access as well.

...just a thought.

Hi Ken...

I have been posting how to find the old main road down Baja and yes... many parts can still be driven.. Now, I think you are refering to the 'super-highway' south of Puertecitos... since the road south of San Felipe is still the same (for now). That is right over the top of much of the previous road with maybe a couple tiny exceptions (like at the rock house overlooking El Huerfanito)... So you may be real limited on that section to Huerfanito...

On South, the new highway is more inland (west) of the previous route from 1986 or the earlier 1950's route.

Don't know much about the old routes in the north, but in Baja Sur the coast road, San Jose / Cabo Pulmo / Los Barriles / Boca del Alamo / Los Planes, is definitely worthwhile.....for the fun of it.

The Old Road South of San Felipe.......

.....Parts company with the current road just South of the AM-PM (at the Water Pumping Station) and goes quite a bit inland from the current one for a fair distance. When they started to build the new one, the plan WAS to follow the original route, but was changed to open up the access to the Campos on the beach.

Ken I suggest you follow the old Puertecitos road just south of the 7-11 Pemex station as you leave San Felipe south and take it all the way to where it joins hwy5 at KM52. That will cure you of wanting to spend much time on the old road. You'll probably need a stiff drink and a back brace when you get there.
