El Golfo-Rocky Point
Bummer. I've been wanting to check out that road. I hear it's nice with beautiful views around Adair Bay. Now I'm not so sure. I'm also hearing
that there have been several assaults/armed robberies on the road.
All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

It's a beautiful road. Just drove it. No problems at all.

Where did you hear of this trouble. I live not far away and have heard none of this. There was one event last summer and a couple others reported
but turned out to be unsupported/unfounded. In general the area is as safe as Baja and I would not be concerned to travel the area. As most places
in Mexico, use common sense and travel in the daylight hours. If our current weather wasn't better, we would be at RP/PP.

I am planning on visiting northern Mexico for a simple day trip, and if you just try to blend in, and visit during the daylight hours, it shouldn't be
a problem. If you are afraid, just don't go there.

I drove the highway a few months after it was completed and was disappointingly unimpressed with the scenery. The highway stays maddeningly distant
from the shore except for one area where you do get good views of a small bay/estuary. That was the highlight. But you still arent that close to it.
The dunes areas were not that impressive, either.

Went on a motorcycle run the first of November and no problems. El Golfo also has their Premex finished with concrete all the way from the bottom of
the driveway to the top and back down to the bottom on your way out of the Premex.
Now just recently they had the police chief and one of his officers shot along with another incident of 5 people being killed on the way out of Rocky
Point but no real particulars on this. The issue with the police chief shooting involving none other than the cartel, hmmmm they just do not stop
anywhere in Mexico.
Now, even hearing and knowing this, I will still go back down and enjoy myself and go out at night time. However I will go out at night with a group,
as you should too. The Puerto Penasco Sol Hotel is a good place to stay and bargain your price before you go. Top of the line hotel, so expect no
less than $90 dollars unless you bargain better than me,LOL. Don't stop along the roadway just drive and don't drink and drive!! You noticed I did
not say anything about driving a little faster than posted but I did not want to upset anyone here,LOL. There are long open spaces out there, so use
the toll road it may cost you $6 dollars but cuts off a lot of time on your trip down there. We drive from Mexicali so we use two toll road areas
going and coming. Take care & Travel Safely bajafun777 "No Hurry, No Worry, JUST FUN"

Bajafun, are you saying that the El Golfo-Penasco road is now a toll road?

I know this is a year old, but would like BajaFun to see and answer Hook's question...
Anyone else use the El Golfo to Puerto Peņasco (Rocky Point) new paved road in the past year (2011)?

Found this from Hook, from a year ago:

I cant tell you what my travel time was between Luis B. Sanchez and Puerto Penasco but you can certainly haul burro on it. No traffic and no cops.
Great surface. There were no toll booths between the two. There were also no topes. This was in May, 2009, after it had been open for a couple months.
I was expecting a more interesting drive but the highway actually keeps its distance from the Gulf for almost all the drive.
I really cant imagine any route being quicker from SoCal. I've heard that agriculture trucks can be an issue between San Luis and Sanchez, though. I
havent driven that stretch.
I'd go I-8 to whatever gets you to SLRC and then down.
You WILL be disappointed in PP. Isn't everyone? Like Phoenix, with a beach. Well, not as big, of course. But just about as ugly.

From the L.A. area, it is faster to travel along I-10 to just this side of Phoenix, and then south along the 85.
I liked visiting the large craters of the Pinacate Preserve along the way to Puerto Peņasco.
I agree that there isn't much to see and do along the shoreline, but the seafood is fresh and the locals are friendly. If you are into sand toys,
this is a fun place, and the water is warm(er) in this part of the gulf.

Ken, From Google Maps and Bing Maps, it's over 100 miles farther on the route you suggest. Google routes us through Mexicali and Hghy 2 to 50 or so
miles west of Sonoyta, then south. Total miles from Palm Springs - 310. Bing routing through Buckeye and AZ 85, 413 miles.
You're route might be a lot more scenic ?? but hard to think it's faster.

...and wouldn't going south of Mexicali then east on BC4 and south to El Golfo and on to Pto. Peņasco on the new hiway be even shorter?

Don't know - it might, but Google wanted to do it this way. Hard to change it's mind when it gets something set up.
I just had to look at Ken's long way around. |

I-10 is much faster with less stops from where I live. In Mexico, I prefer to drive the speed limits to avoid problems.

Well, Ken the map companies say you're way 7 hrs. 2 minutes.
Through Mexicali - 6 hours 25 minutes.
Less than a hour difference but probably $15-$20 more fuel used.

You can fly down both I-10 and the 85 from between 65-80 m.p.h. up until I-8. 55-65 m.p.h. from I-8 up to Lukeville. It isn't the distance, but the
rate of speed you can travel when making good time to Puerto Peņasco.

You're talking the road south from Gila Bend, down to Lukeville/Sonoyta, right? If so, that is definitely NOT faster than, for example, crossing at
San Luis Rio Colorado, and then going across on Mex 2, which is a pretty good road. Also very scenic. If you want to see the Pinacate, cut south at
Los Vidrios on Mex 2, then through the Pinacate, and rejoin the road north of Penasco. I've done all those roads, but not the new one from El Golfo.
And I have heard the same thing regarding crime on that road, Oso.
