Camping on the Texas Coast (Any Good?)
I'm considering going to the Brownsville area and exploring for beach camping between Dec 28 and Jan 6. Is Texas actually what they say, or is it all
about big government control just like here in California? Is it possible and desirable to just show up and find camping spots along the coast, or is
everything super legitimate and on a reservation system? If so, about how much do they charge? I'll be bringing my Toyota motorhome. Are dogs OK, or
is it on leashes only? I'd like to be enthusiastic about the United States, but it's hard sometimes when everything seems off limits to the non-luxury
traveler or has strict government control.

Try finding info on Padre Island or is it South Padre Island...? It is like giant Shell Island type beach along the coast of Texas that you can drive
on!
This from photos and stories in Four Wheerler or Off Road Magazine I have seen.

Thanks. Here is something encouraging from the first link. "Please note that no reservations are taken for camping. Please call Malaquite Visitor
Center at 361.949.8068 to check on availability in the campgrounds. Space is almost always available on the beaches, unless they are closed due to
unusually high tides."

Just remember Texas is a "CHL" state! This is from the first link under "Park News".
