Ensenada, Taxes, Tacos and Cops

Jose, Vacation Boy(VB) and myself took off early Wednesday morning to Ensenada to pay our annual property taxes for Rancho Matomi, 20 hectares at K 61 on the road to Puertecitos. Since I can not drive yet for extended periods of time, due to my recent back surgery, Jose and VB split the driving. We got to Ensenada around 11:30 am, a warm and clear prefect day. We were hungry since we left without having any breakfast. Well, Jose and VB were determined to find their favorite fish taco shop Caugatun, alleged to have the finest fish tacos where the locals go. We finally found it after asking a man on the street. It's a small world since it turns out the man was one Jose's cousin's friends who also happens to know Jose, interesting that this man was also going to the same taco shop so we just parked and walked a block to the taco shop. This was not the usual fish taco shop by a long shot. I had a fillet lightly battered in something like cornmeal it was served with a helping of small shrimp cooked in rich creamy mild chipotle sauce.. It was great. I also had shrimp, fish chicarron, and tuna tacos but none of these compared to the first one.

After lunch we set off to pay the taxes but were not sure where to go since we had heard that they had moved the Municipio offices from downtown to the new government center out past Costco. While at the stop light I asked a cop where we could pay the taxes and he told us in any government office including the police station. He gave us directions to the station and we took off. We went a few blocks and were lost here is where fate was on our side. As we were lost and headed west the same cop turned left on to our street and came toward us so we stopped mid block and hailed him down, he stopped with traffic behind him and graciously re-directly us. Once we got to the police station we paid the taxes which were fully computerized and were out of there in less than 10 minutes.

The taxes amounted to 398 pesos and the diesel RT El Centro to Ensenada 700 pesos but the tacos were sure good though I do not think I could not find this place again.. Looking forward to paying taxes again to get more tacos that is unless we figure out to pay them online.

A big muchas garcias to that fine cop in Ensenada who saved us extra driving, time and diesel by not having to go all the way to the new Palacio Municipal.

I'll bet that cop would have accepted your tax money and paid it for you. He really sounds like one swell guy.

Is Rancho Matomi really a ranch? 20 hectarias is a lot of dirt.
