Gas in Garrafon Bottles???
Is it OK to carry gas in the "plastic" 5 GALLON WATER BOTTLES??? Thinking of duct taping the lid on and carrying them roof of the van....Any
chemical reaction????..I have 2 "red" cans..but would like to carry more for the remote trips

if you care about safety of others, carry your gasoline in jugs designed for and labeled appropriately.
if you carry gasoline in white or blue water jugs, an unaware person might not be aware of hazard, and who knows what could happen?
i am amused at people that carry gasoline jugs on roof - they are rarely appropriately tied down for their weight. a 5-gallon jug weighs a lot, and
in a crash will often come loose, sending a gasoline projectile on a path to who knows where.
fyi, duct tape is not particularly resistant to gasoline, not sure why your fuel transport is designed around duct tape, but i am sure it must be
creative.

In the desert heat the gas will expand greatly and start leaking gas on your roof and down the sides of you vehicle. then you are driving a time
bomb..One spark and it will be good bye Amigo..
Been there...Almost burned up...

Wow! Those reused water containers get brittle and break, as Larry said. A deluge of gasoline down your vehicle would be awful. Gas is about 8
pounds per gallon, a 5 gal container would be around 40 pounds on the roof of the car. There are better containers.

Hey, why not, you might even keep the local Fire Fighters or Paramedics busy. Sorry, I have had to deal with way to many people burned beyond
recognition from improperly carried fuel. JH

Even better, put it in large zip loc bags so you can more evenly distribute the weight.

I'd only recommend doing it if your smoking a ciggy while filling/ductaping the garafon, and tying it up on the roof...

and not sure if you already knew... taking cans of gas into Mexico is a no-no... fill them there (at El Rosario where the pumps are honest and the
owner is an amigo to us all).
Besides, gas in Mexico is much cheaper now, and better for mileage as it is pure gasoline without the filler ethynol.
