Pedestrian Bridge News Cut & Paste

From San Diego Union Tribune.................................................

San Ysidro's new pedestrian bridge opens Friday

By Elizabeth Aguilera

Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 6:09 p.m.

Those traveling between the U.S. and Mexico on foot will take a new path Friday with the opening of the new pedestrian bridge at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

The old bridge will be closed at noon and the new 806 foot-long East-West bridge will open at that time. It spans over Interstate 5 and connects the transit plaza on San Ysidro Boulevard on the east to the north side of Camiones Way on the west.

The new bridge has been under construction since December 2009. The project was overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration and construction is part of a larger project to modernize and expand the port of entry.

The three-phase, $577 million, project includes an increase of northbound lanes from 24 to 34, an increase of southbound lanes from six to up to 12, additional buildings for the Department of Homeland Security and larger vehicle inspection areas.

More funding will be required for the project, slated for completion in 2016.
