Sweet! What size Honda is pushing it? That sounds like a pretty good price for a new panga with a 4 stroke.

sweet ride all right and I love the colour!!!
I have mixed feeling about the coop getting into the tourism business. On one hand, it makes it easier to get into business as opposed to a local guy
because of the subsidies the cooperativas get...more guys will be working as captains. It is pretty darn hard for a normal mexican guy in a small
village to come up with the cash to get all the gear, permits and insurance.
Usually there is a roll type of setup so every fisherman gets a turn which is fair....but...the problem here is that the client cant choose which
captain he wants...you have to go out with the next guy on the list.
It is more difficult to make decisions if the whole coop has to have a meeting to agree on things too.
Often, fishing can be a personal thing and clients have a good relationship with their guides and clients like to choose who they go out with, if they
speak english etc. The fishermen will most likely get paid way less too as the charter fees will go to the coop and the guide just paid a normal
salary.
I also dont know how they will deal with fish caught. A big issue here is how in the past anglers can catch all the fish they want as they went to the
coop but it is illegal to use sportsfish fish commercially. The fisheries officer commented that they would not be able to sell those fish as they did
before so clients will have the same limits as other sportsfishing outfits and will have to have the biosphere reserve permits/bracelets too this
year.
It will be interesting to see if they can make it in the tourism sector...suerte amigos! Blanca...will you be handling their enquiries and bookings?

yes, it is with mixed feeling for us too but here is the scoop:
1. once the coop charged $400 to pick up a boat that was stuck out in the water. excessive cost and we were not happy about it.
2. another time some guests were at the beach, early inthe a.m. and no one ever went to meet them to take them fishing and did not have the courtesy
to call beforehand.

these types of behaviours will not happen again if the coop is handling affairs.
for sure the cost just went up, for sure the number of fish will be limited and unfortunately, we will only be able to take out personal friends on
our boat ... changes changes changes
the good news is that they will, hopefully, be a lot more organized than they have been in the past !!
we will be happy to help anyone with info on the fishing procedures, as best we can, most of it is still up in the air .....

I'm sorry, to me this does not sound good. Private boats charged for launching? Motivation must be...... I understand the Cooperativos are pretty
successful, right? The Ejidos have never been very successful at Tourism---La Serenidad or Las Brisas in SJ del Cabo. I hope Blanca can get
fishing permits as part of her B&B similar to Shari and Juan. Dare I say...Times they are a Changin. How much for a daily panga trip, Amiga.
Good luck. Tio

where did you see about private boats charged for launching tio?
cooperativas are good at commercial fishing but sportsfishing is a whole new ball game. One must be organized, someone must do alot of correspondence,
bookings etc, and know how to treat clients. I think they should hire Pam to teach them the ropes.
Getting all the permits required is really really tricky, time consuming and very expensive...nearly not worth it for the amount of business we do and
such high overhead really doesnt make for much profit...plus I understand only locals can get permits in the biosphere reserve but once Blanca is a
national maybe they can do that....I cant imagine that ONLY the cooperative can get a permit but who knows.

Ok I have to chime in because I was the one towed in by the coop. This tow would of been well over 1000 dollars in california. The coop has treated
us very well the last 7 years in la Bocana. I will say they need some serious help in the tourism area. You can ask three people a question and get
3 different answers. I have my own boat there but when I inquire for friends it's hard to ge consistent answers.
I hope it work out for them.

Believe it or not the other guys would rather just fish commercial. Very little interest in taking out gringos. The commercial guys do very well
so taking out customers doesn't really help them.
It's not like if they don't have customers they don't fish. These guys are working all the time.

Let's wait till after the captains start getting nice tips from the fishermen to see who wants to be a sport fishing captain.....dt

The other men are somewhat jealous of the "extras" that Juanchy and Joaquin get from the gringos, but they have been working with the tourists for
years, and have made a lot of friends. The other people have seen that helping the visitors will sometimes be rewarded, and sometimes not.

It's already been happening (good tips)still not much interest. Maybe because they are able to sell all the fish they catch commercially but with the
sportfishing most of it goes to the customers. Don't get me wrong there are a few guys who love the sportfishing thing but just a few. Bocana does
real well for a small fishing village!!!

Something they need to work out for sure. How much the customer keeps. If it's a true sportfishing trip it should be ALL for the customer.
My point was that with the commercial trips it's all for the guys and no splitting with gringos.

Good local info. and insight. Guess they'll try it and we'll see. It's hard not to look at old pictures of fishing in Baja like in The Baja Catch
or Tom Miller's Anglers Guide and not want to freeze time! In Mexico things
move slowly but they do move on. This area is a special place so lets enjoy it while we can. High gas prices may bring lots of fisherman this summer
so the villagers may do well! Esperamos lo mejor! Tio
