Yup. The Sinaloas are alleged to be growing poppies in the Guadalupe Valley (inland Ensenada) for local opium (heroin) production. allegedly. Poppies are pretty common around all southern California and Baja- when you see them planted in huge fields in nice rows... don't stay around snapping photos for too long.

I have seen some of them growing wild in hills between the beach and town. I think the herds of grazing cows would run over anybody trying to grow them around here for a cash crop...

Guadalupe Valley. How nice. I always figuered the place was a safe zone for cartels. That's where they would disappear into when escaping police after doing their thing in Ensenada.
I in fact know one of the heavy hitters who has had a place out there for years.

Perhaps the size wasn't obvious but the ones here are MUCH larger than the common California poppies that grew in my yard.

According to my botany teacher in college, even CA poppies have the active ingredient...just not as much/concentrated. I believe I read that cattle graze on them in stressful situations (ie-drought).

I've grown poppies for years, (Papaver somniferum), also known as bread-seed poppies. You can buy the seeds at any garden store, and the poppy seeds you buy at the grocery store are the same.

I can't tell from your picture, but those almost look like the poppies you buy at the garden store that are already flowered. They are like dwarf poppies, and I am fairly certain they aren't opium containing. The seed pod is not nearly as big. Also, the opium poppies I grow and often come across have purple flower pedals.

Check out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_poppy

You can see them growing in peoples yards, and on the side of streets. California poppies are completely different.
