Copper Canyon
We leave the Falls early and head for Creel. It's very cold and we are bundled up as we pack the truck. We stay on Mex16 rather than taking the
shortcut on Chi 22 to San Juanito. Seems there's been some "activity" on that road lately . My theory is the bad guys are still in bed, but why take a
chance.
Morning mist at the Creel turn off from Mex 16.
I am cheating here. I didn't take pictures in Creel this trip, so I'll put these two shots from previous ones. Train from Chihuahua, March 2009.

I always drop in at the hotel in Divisadero for a beer. The bar is perched on the canyon rim and has a fantastic view. The place is empty. American
tourists have disappeared and only a few Mexican tours are in business these days.
Seems like a good way to get around.
Another cheater shot. We could not coordinate with the train schedule so here is one I took March '09. We were on this train from el Fuerte to Creel.
This is the Divisadero stop. Note the armed guard.
Cherocahui is is the last town before the big drop off into CC. We met an American Dentist who is doing volunteer work here. Small world; he's a
friend of Pete's Dentist in Wisconsin.
I drive a Porsche and a BMW around town, but this is really my baby. Big 4X4 and 5.7L Tundra. Not as nimble as the Tacoma, but very comfy.
The view point just before the big drop. It's 68º here-104º at the bottom.
Urique view and note how the cliff drops on the right. In my opinion this road is more extreme than to Batopilas. Looks shorter on the map but takes a
bit longer.
Eurique has a suburb one hours walk downriver.

Downtown. We did not see many Indians here. A few women and girls. We saw no Indian men in native dress.
The year my Dad was born.
Our innkeeper Rafael. He has a several properties besides this hotel and a large house. Methinks he has "other income"?
The river is flowing but not very high.
After hiking for two and a half hours we were looking forward to a short nap. The electricity conks out on a regular basis so we sit outside in the
heat.

Have you read, "God's Middle Finger?" Research the book. It's a pretty good read.

to say this but Dennis' has recommended a very good read.

Yes I have read it and I require anyone who travels that part of the world with me to read it before they commit to the trip.

We missed the siege of Morelia by about 15 minutes last year. Six major arteries to the city blocked by burned busses. Still don’t know how many
killed except the army got the “spiritual” head of La Familia in Michoacán. You can now be in the middle of some very deep do-do these days on the
mainland. It pays to have one's wits about them these days.

those photos are excellent ... what a wonderful trip .... and now I have to get the book because we went by train to Creel and by bus to Batopilas
without reading it !! I do recommend THE SILVER MAGNET as it is 3 books in one - and one of them is an autobiography written by Shepherd's son (he
went to Batopilas and succeeded in putting in electricity so that it became the first town after Mexico City to have electicity. When you see how
remote it is - you totally comprehend what a tremendous feat this was!!)
We saw the raramuri indians around town in Creel, down in Batopilas and running along the road ...men women kids (kids were in a sorry state).
the crafts they make are incredible and tomorrow I will post some pics of the wooden snake, the baskets ....the pottery.
