WITHOUT Passport Crossing
Needed to haul a friend north to San Diego yesterday and was promised taco lunch for the favor. Bad news, was that the targeted taco shop, "Los
Amigos", on southeast side of central square in Tecate was closed. ?
Good news was that the low-stress CBP officer at Tecate accepted my driver's license for crossing. She did ask if I had my birth certificate(no) and
if the vehicle was mine. She did not ask for my SoDakota reg. I simply responded that I goofed and forgot to pack my passport that morning.
More good news was my first visit to Lucha Libre Taco Shop at Washington/I-5 in SD was very satisfying. Thanks to Nomad El Gato Loco for the recommendation!
I also got the discount on my 22lb turkey at Von's without purchasing the required $25 in additional groceries.
No hassle on Av Internacional/TJ headed west to TJ Playas and Toll Road last night at 5PM.

I walked back at TJ a couple Sat's. ago, crossers
were split into 2 sections, passport holders, etc.,
and non passport holders. It looked 50-50,
there is no enforcement of the requirement, don't
know if there will ever be. What's the point of the
reg? Crossers not needing an fmm don't need
a passport, passcard. Seems if they want compliance
Calif and other states should have that Enhanced Drivers license

NOTE:
the NEW California driver's licenses are the enhanced type.
I just received mine...looks pretty high-tech.

Udo, do you mean that new Ca. Drivers license's are
accepted by Homeland Security as a compliant
form of ID for land crossings into the US? I know
they were thinking about that, with an additional
$12 or so above the regular license

What's that phrase? I beg to differ? Enhanced State
DL'S, I believe there are 6 or so states that have them, were designed and
are accepted by Customs/ Homeland Security for LAND CROSSINGS back into the US. Don't know if Ca. has
become part of that program. The enhanced licenses
identify the holder as to his/her legal status to enter
the US, although this is not widely known
Here is an explanation of the progrm, it is a low
cost alternative to a Passport

Yes, you are supposed to have it... BUT, they cannot keep you out of your country... they only can make it more difficult (to confirm you are indeed
an American)... I have a passport, but people I know don't and still cross the border freely until they are able to get theirs.

And why would I want to take my wife to Paris Hilton?
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Or Istanbul. Or Moscow. Or Cairo. Or Brisbane. Or Beijing.
Point exceptionally well-taken.
Ya can't fly nowhere without a passport. That includes Mexico.

way back in the day when passports were still not "required" I would sometimes get a officer who would ask very interesting questions like Where did
you go to elementary school, Do I look like Bob Dylan ?
That last one gave me a good laugh
