Passport Cards

I want my daughter and son-in-law to get passport cards, so that they can come to visit me more often, and not worry about the time it takes to cross the border. They have recently renewed their passports though, and they have a 4 year old too. When I look at form DS-82, it seems as though you need to renew your passport to get a passport card. Is that true, or do they just return the valid passport when they send the card. Also, you cannot use that form for someone who is under 16--so what do they do about the baby?

When I got a Passport the cost for the additional
Passcard was $20, if you get the passcard by itself it was
$40, I believe you can get a passcard at anytime,
whether you have a passport or not.
Not positive, but I would not worry about an 4 yr. old, but I don't want to say for sure. I walked back to the US
at TJ a couple weeks ago, inside the US Customs
Bldg was a sign directing pedestrians to different lines,
there was a printed sign that read 'Those with just a
Drivers License, birth cert', here's the best 1, 'those
with no Official ID', so actually you don't need any
form of ID to cross back. However just reread your post,
assume you are talking about the Ready Line,
my understanding EVERYONE in the vehicle must have the Passcard, or Sentri to use the Ready Lane

Yes. First they send you the passport card and then later they return your passport book.

Check out this thread from Dec when the READY LANE opened...

http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=56982#pid6844...

IT WORKS........;)

And yes, they do send back the valid passport separatly a few days after you get the cards in an unmarked brown envelope. The whole process took me 11 days. However, I sent it in by express mail.

We used ours for the first time several weeks ago coming from San Felipe to El Centro and used the East gate. The main drawback is that you need to know ahead of time to be in the left hand lane or you are toast! The lane for Ready Pass does not start until you are up there a ways and if you did not know there is no way you would be able to get over there. We have not used it on a regular basis so I am not sure how much it helped us. It seemed like we were moving right along but heckkkkkk it is a crap shoot on any day anyway!
