GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Julio Gonzalez Estrada, who helped make tequila a lucrative export for Mexico, died at his home in the western state of Jalisco,
industry sources said. He was 83.
The brand Gonzalez Estrada created in 1951, Tres Magueyes, became Tequila Don Julio, one of the first premium tequila brands credited with
popularizing the spirit outside Mexico.
After building up the reputation of Don Julio in the United States and Europe, Gonzalez Estrada sold the brand to Britain’s Diageo in a transaction
valued at $150 million.
The sale didn’t mark the end of Gonzalez Estrada’s involvement in the industry, however, as he put two of his sons in a charge of a firm making
tequila under the label Reserva de los Gonzalez.
Production of tequila accounts for 35,000 jobs in Mexico, according to a group representing the industry. EFE

My sincerest appreciation into the insight of my favorite spirit, David.
About once a month I take a shot of Don Julio 1942, and every other month I take a shot of Herencia Historico.
My daily shots of the elixir are either Orendain, Costco, or whatever bottle approximates a $10.00 (U.S.) price threshold. IMHO, I normally add a
little key lime juice to the tequila I drink, therefore an expensive tequila makes almost no sense.

How many of those jobs are in Baja?
Guess we will find out at the Annual Tequila Expo, in mid October.
Last couple of years expo participants has been down. Year before last was the best because it was a tequila/food fair. Lots of different foods as
well as tequila.

Great, informative, thanks. I think we have Tequila 1800 on reserve. I don't know if it is any good but it taste O.K.

I thought I was the only one who drank this stuff. I keep the 1942 out of sight.
