Mystery - one story or more? Any questions?

Rotano
Distributing

I’m about as far from being a homophobe as a guy can get. I think the military Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell thing was correct and it ought to stay that way. As to the non-military workplace I think there are enough problems with man-woman employees; employee relations between gays can be disruptive if not ruinous if management is not right on top of it. This company, Rotano Distributing, we do everything electronics parts and pieces (except aircraft), could be a poster child for what not to allow when it comes to sexual orientation and employees.

I can say all this because by now everybody is convinced Levy and Collier are never, ever coming back to work.

The warehouse manager and his male assistant ran off together about seven months ago. If that hadn’t happened I would still be stuck in stock and dock so it was a very lucky thing for me that the big kahuna likes to hire from within. They disappeared the same day and although an outsider may not have picked up on it, this whole place knew about their affair and could tell you when it started almost to the day. They were smart guys but that kind of thing is really hard to hide and over time we pretty much just accepted it and all the snickering slowly died out.

This kind of thing doesn’t happen every day so there are a lot of people still scratching their heads about how to handle it. The accountants are still going nuts trying to figure out what to do about their salaries, pensions and benefits. We did an inventory (took eight days) and they did an interim audit – nothing taken so far as they can see.

My bennies went up and I was pleased that they allowed me to implement a couple of new programs I was pushing on Levy that he wouldn’t listen to. Mike Carter moved up to Collier’s job and he’s perfect for the position; maybe even better than Collier. So their leaving caused a big work delay hiccup for a week or so but one could make the case that in the long run the whole operation may be better off than before. As for the two men, Collier was single and Levy was married with a young son about three years old. The company paid Levy’s salary to his wife for the first six months, then had legal write an official letter about their position.

The old man had a fight with the accountants about COBRA. I think, in the end, it was decided Levy’s wife and kid get the same COBRA rights as they might have, had Levy died at work of a non-work related cause. That whole thing is pretty tricky and they were all trying to cover their respective bases to be protected if Levy came back, showed up again. Levy’s wife’s legal status would be abandoned because Levy has never tried to contact her or anyone else.

At first there was lots of speculation about where they went, what they were up to. The police were here to interview people – child welfare and some others too. It’s all pretty much died down after all this time. Wally Cummings and I took some presents and clothes over for the kid at Christmas. I was surprised that Sky, Skyler remembered me from the company picnic last year. If she and the boy are hurting you can’t tell it by the house, by her. She looks great, good, I mean she looks healthy and all.

I take her to dinner once in a while. We go to Autry or Allenville. Even after all this time it might not be proper to be seen around town here. Levy is about the only thing we don’t talk about.

I’m glad for that because there’s still talk around work about what happened and I for one would just like to forget about the whole thing. Some wonder if Levy and Collier are still out there, still together. They’d be surprised if I told them I know about that part. They are together. They are very close, touching --- at peace, in the arms of the Lord.

When people start talking about those things, wondering this, wondering that, it’s like I say, better to follow the Don’t ask, Don’t Tell thing.

Whoa!! One wonders, and then wonders some more. Is this what it is like in the mind of a banal psychopath? No guilt, no remorse, oh, by the way, I killed two guys and am dating one of their wives. Whoa!! Chilling really to see this stuff through this set of dissociated eyes. All so normal, all so natural.....except.....they are dead and I killed them. Whoa!!

Where on earth do you come up with these characters? Are you watching Lilyhammer in your spare time?

Just when I was feeling bad because I missed the last episode of Criminal Minds, you put a story like this one out there. "Fertile Mind" comes to my awareness level.

The point? Bet you just get crazy when you watch the news, somebody gets dead, the suspect is on the loose. What is it you don't understand about all the backround things of the life around you?

Goat, you can make a Grimm's Fairy Tale into Mao's Red book. If you can't see that the gay angle was a just a small part of the setup, this must have been your first or second mystery tale. Sorry I drug you through all that. Just dial me out in the future. I don't have what you need. I don't do horror stuff. Just can't get my head around all those 666 things.

As usual Jorge I am dazzled by the brilliance of your fertile mind!!! How many times have I asked you how you come up with your ideas?? This one is, well, disturbing and intense, just like good short fiction should be! You MUST publish a book of your short stories!! Gracias otra vez amigo!!
