how about all you Tin boat people wade in here
what makes a good Tin boat for Baja
size, make, equiptment, engine, trailer, ect

12' to 14' Valco or Gregor (I like the welded Gregor) with at least 15hp.
big thing is launching. Many places you'll need 4 wheel drive or some sort of wheels on the boat to launch over soft sand. From past experience if
you have engine trouble you might be better off with a 2 stroke.
I\'ve been told I\'m preoccupied with Baja. They just don\"t understand, in fact neither do I.

Bingo!!!!
I have used both---------12 Foot Valco w/ 10 horse Johnson 2-stroke when out by myself, and 14' Gregor w/ 15 horse 2-stroke when 2 of us go out. I
loved both, but had more confidence in the welded Gregor.

what about a Bimini, do you prefer a 2 stroke over a 4
how about the trailer,, as I am assuming the reason you want a small Tin boat is the you can launch it on the beach
( and yes lets just make a 4X4 a given)
and other must have equipment

Mine: Valco 12ft....20hp Johnson...picked a tinnie back when the road to Gonzaga was a wreck...threw the Tinnie on the roof rack of the FJ
Cruiser...now throw it on top of the Tundra....WHEELS...built a set of nice fat "Baja" beach wheels...search bajanomad or bdoutdoors for a link to the
build...key here is that the wheels are mounted mid-ship...NOT on the transom...balance point was selected with boat LOADED..= no lifting..I can lift
the bow of my loaded boat with 1 hand..then it rolls on soft , fat garden tractor style rear wheels...best investment for this boat
Now...Go find a boat and join us....

I like your ideas on the "over beach" rollers. My 2 boats, also cartopped, run over the beach on 2 dual-tire'ed commercially made transome wheels,
which work good as far as I am concerned. They are made by the same outfit that built my Eide car-top boat loader. With that boat loader, I can
operate solo if I had to--------but normally there was a partner to help me load the boat. Actually, even without the "boat-loader" I could strain
and load the boat myself on top of my Callen Camper shell. It all worked sweet!!!
On edit--------I never had a bimini, but that is an excellent idea, and I do have one on my Boston Whaler which I DON'T take south of the border.

I have an old (1963) 14 foot riveted aluminum Starcraft that I really like. No leaks, loose rivets. It's my third boat. Foredeck with a steering wheel
and remote controls. It used to have a windshield. Traditional runabout style. I've replaced the seats with simple painted wood bench seats and loose
cushions that can be used as personal floatation devices.
Max HP is 40 HP. It had an old 65 Merc on it when I bought it that I used for a few months before getting rid of it. Now looking for a relatively new
30 to 40 horse. I might buy a new 2 stroke Yamaha in Ensenada.
Any thoughts about that idea?

why do you and others think a 2 stroke is better than a 4 for a tin boat?

Easier for the locals to work on, less to go wrong. But to be honest I'm a 60's dirtbiker and I just believe 2 strokes rule'

For launching I use 4 inflatable boat fenders as rollers, when one pops out the back run around and put it in front. Haul the rollers in the boat, or
leave them on the beach. Launched a 15' Gregor that way for years. It still requires some muscle and at least a couple of people, the wheels at the
balance point sound good.

I may be wrong, but aren't they significantly cheaper to buy and maintain? They certainly have fewer moving parts. Plus the power to weight ratio is
higher with 2 strokes and I want to use max HP or close to it.
I know 4 strokes can be more fuel efficient.
I also know that the gap between 2 and 4 strokes on all these issues, except the number of moving parts, is narrowing.
