A VERY ugly side to the temporary vehicle bonds on the Mainland

In San Carlos, we had an individual who had an ATV stolen last week. The ATV was part of the whole-hog nature of the temporary bond that he got at K21, below Nogales. Aduana consolidates all the vehicles the owner shows up with, including the tow vehicle (though exempt in the free zone), even if only a utility trailer is involved. This bond is mandatory (well, as mandatory as the Aduana officer at K21 chooses, of course) if you are towing virtually ANYTHING, especially trailers with ATVs, cars, etc. The free zone exemption only applies to your primary vehicle. Larger motorhomes and boats can use the 10 year temporary importation permit, which is different than this bond.

Now comes the good part. He now has confirmation from Aduana AND Banjercito that, in addition to paying for police reports (and bringing an interpretor) from the municipal, state and federal police AND using a local attorney, HE MUST PONY UP THE AMOUNT NECESSARY TO LEGALLY IMPORT ALL ITEMS ON HIS BOND!!! Aduana's estimate is that it will cost him an additional 26,000 pesos to do this. Until he does this, he wont be able to bring his truck back into Mexico.........as the original temporary bond wont be cancelled.

At this point, it's unclear whether all the vehicles that he still possesses (truck, trailer) would LEGALLY be imported. He's checking on that. But he doubts it as his truck is too new for the importation requirement.

Of course, he's not sure what the police reports are for, if no one will exonerate him from the responsibilities of the bond, based on theft.

Another bend-over welcome from Mexico to fellow NAFTA neighbors. :fire:
