Linda..

Vicente didn't want to discuss arranging the entrance for wheelchair access. As you know Linda, Dennis has alot of stuff when you enter the door and I mentioned that we need to have it moved to get a wheelchair in there. Maybe Vincente didn't want to talk about it in front of Dennis cause he didn't want to upset him. He wanted to wait till Dennis got home to start making it wheelchair safe. But this has to be done in the immediate future, not later. So maybe I misinterpreted why he didn't want to talk about it. In these types of situations, you have to do what's best for the patient. Dennis said he would scoot around in his computer chair. I don't think that would work since he is partially paralyzed.

I will help you in any way I can by talking with Vincente with you. I don't know if it will help. If Dennis can talk on the phone with him, would make a difference but sounds like he doesn't think he needs any of these things. Hardhead!

It is good to hear that Lulu is receiving good care and attention.

Maybe at some point one of you can take a picture of Lulu with her caretakers and send it to Dennis. I can really understand being very worried about his dog.

Very happy he was safely transferred --- And Doc---good on you for getting it all done!

Smile Dennis, by the time you read all of this, there will probably be a good argument happening on this this thread over something.

Having suffered an 80% loss of power in one leg, and 100% loss of use of my left hand and arm, I can say I prayed, swore, whined, and roared for a walker with BIG wheels, and a full crossbar to lean on. They do not exist in México or in the USA. Someone will have to find a wheeled walker with at least four inch diameter wheels and then fit a grip crossbar with vinyl handle. Put a front crossbar on it and attach a couple of those huge plastic spring loaded clamps to grasp things. Next is a basket to hold stuff.

He may need a wheel chair now, but he will ask for a walker just as soon as he is able to stand.

Get a pair of CANADIAN CRUTCHES in the states. Both are the same but they are a million times better than a crutch or a regular cane.

Make damned sure he has adequate grab bars for use around the toilet, and getting in and out of the shower. Get a big, a really big plastic chair (they are dark green) for him to sit on while in the shower. Make sure the tile is non slip. Those rolls of anti-slip shelf lining work great.

It is HARD to reach up to a grab bar, pull oneself up. Put the toilet grab bar at a level even with where he navel would be. The add a second one, parallel eight inches higher. If his shower has a big step up or down into it, add a wide step. Do not add a ramp! If his step is huge you may have to make two steps up. Whatever it takes. Just make sure he has something excellent to grab onto with his right hand.

He needs an electric can opener, and a wedge device to jam cans and bottles into mounted on his kitchen counter so he can open stuff with one hand. Go into your kitchen and try to do ANYTHING with one hand. You'll get the drift right away.

A l-o-n-g soft back scrubbing brush for the shower. He will want to wash his left side using his right arm and hand.

You cannot find any of this stuff in Mexico. Not in Tijuana or Ensenada.

The bath stuff can be found in Bed Bath & Beyond. Roll of anti slip in Home Depot. Safety bars can be made but don't try making them from skinny steel. If they have to be rebar, make it one inch stuff. He will need to grip to save his life.

Better hardware stores and Harbor Freight carry a really nice one handed pickup tool with suction cup-like fingers on the end. Don't settle for a cheap one! The good ones are made in USA and will actually work.

Make sure all his medicines come in NON-child proof Rx bottles. One handed removal of a child proof cap will leave the best of us in tears.

Figure out a good blood lab someone near Punta Banda. If they put him on blood thinners he must get his blood checked regularly, and it isn't an option.

Tie one hand behind your back, hop around on one foot and you'll gt an idea of what he is going to face until he manages recovery.

Insight from Experience

Great info DavidE

Certainly food for thought. Some strokes, as the two my wife has had are not nearly as severe as the one DavidE is referring to. Even the mild (mini-strokes) are challenging but with good care, helpful devices, love and determination recovery can be measured over time.

Enthusiasm tempered with patience and knowledge and a good re-hab program mean so much.

good advice DavidE. I think it's about time to start the collection process for our pal DENNIS. he would do the same for most of us, i'm sure!

i'll volunteer my time/tools/labor to install any grab bars, steps, or whatever he needs. i can possibly get some stainless grab bars free of charge from a sub contractor but i need to know dimension and quantities.

anyone else?

Yes, I can contribute $50. I will be down that way in August for the Blues Festival and can help at his place that week if there is a need for a helper at that time.

UPDATE

Just spoke to Dennis, he's in the "holding tank" as he put it waiting on the Doctors to give him his results of the CAT scan. He said our Moderator Doug Means stopped in to see him...that was nice Doug.

hey Doc, can you take point on this until D gets ready to come home? there are U2U's flying offering all kinds of help, not just money. DENNIS is gonna need some additions to his house before he comes home. there are a handful of Nomads offering to make that happen.

they say it's the thought that counts. let's just make sure our ole buddy gets the care he needs first. things will fall into place as needed......

oh, and Thank You for caring about our friend!

Help

Dennis built his house with a wheelchair ramp and the dimensions of the doorways were built with the dimensions of the wheelchair in mind. He is going to be fine. There just needs to be some furniture rearrangement to allow for passage of the wheelchair because he can't walk because his left leg is so weak. He can't use his left arm, but I am sure in time will be back at the computer pecking with his right hand. This is a terrible thing to happen to anyone, and for people to not pull together would be even more terrible.

I am really glad to hear that Dennis is at Kaiser and getting the care he needs and thanks Janene for all your help. I was hoping to be able to stop in and see Dennis while we were heading south today but it looks like we crossed the border going in opposite directions. Please tell Dennis that I will be back up next week and would really like to see him, be it north or south of the border.

Take care old friend and know that we'll keep you in our prayers...
