The Peoples Guide to Mexico Website Is Reborn

For too long it languished in a torpor. Now it is interesting, constantly being attended to and is not something that would compete with the Nomad site. There is no forum but rather a blog now.

I started going to Mex in the 70's, surfing the
Ensenada area. But not until I looked thru
a copy of Peoples Guide to Mex in the early
80's did I began traveling most of Mex for
30+ yrs., to me Carl Franz set me off on this
path, kinda of a mentor,
I thank him for it. His book is legendary,
and I believe predates anything BN, David E,
what was that fond Mex slang nickmane Carl
tagedd you with? It escapes me

Looks ok but to big to much information, I have lived on the gulf I have lived in Lake Chapala, in San Jose de Gracia, and now will live in Punta Banda. The information that interests me is where I am moving, I could care less what is going on in Mexico City, or Cancun, I understand that the puntabandanewsletter does a great job, just wish there was some more, it appears to be a free advertisement site for several resterants. OK I will go to these places but there must be more to the area. I was contacted today about a post about security in the area, that was better information to me then Mama's menu I cook a mean Gringo hamburger and fires my price will make the local places attack me. $80.00 pesos for a hamburger and fries, thank you for making my mortage payment at 100 pesos a kilo, a hamburger costs 12.5 pesos, add the bun, and the goodies, sounds like a rip off. we have sold this for 5 years at 30 pesos, Hamburger and fresh cut fires, fresh water free.

El señor Franz nunca me dio un apodo.
Carl Franz never gave me a nickname.

prorader I believe you are referring to a guide book like Lonely Planet or Moon Handbook when you mention Cancun or El Enchilada Grandote.

Hamburguesas que cuestan 30 pesos, me gusta. ¿Dónde?

WOW! Thanks for the link. Traveling through mainland Mexico in the early '70s it was required reading. Truly an iconic tome. Got a chuckle about BN predating it. No Way.

This from the 1974 second edition PEOPLES GUIDE TO MEXICO that I keep on the shelf.

"It is not about which hotels to stay in, or the most interesting towns to visit. The purpose of this book is to teach you how to find out those things for yourself"

This book ignited my dreams of travel to Mexico as a student in Berkeley in the mid 70's. Not many Econ majors took intensive Spanish classes in those days like I did. To this day I use the Spanish a lot more than my knowledge of monetary and fiscal policy.

"wherever you go......there you are!"

That second edition is worth some dinero. The first edition with the square page corners sells for a lot of money. I assume yours has the white cover with the immigration queue?

En Estados Unidos perhaps. Whether we like it or not, Baja have become a gringolandia, with prices often higher than NOB, because in Baja you are not NOB, so you have no choice. Like a double or triple cost of anything in airport shops.

Yes, although the white cover has yellowed with age.
I've read those stories so many times. Now living in Mexico we are creating more stories of our own. Life is good.

I believe that was the purpose of the book El jefe: An inspiration and not a template.

Gary Jennings is my favorite México hammock novelist. I mean, mushrooms, incest, cannibalism, killer purple dye snails -- White streak down hair due to scorpion sting, eunuchs, still beating hearts flopping town pyramid steps; what a book to read while stretched out on a beach munching tamales de elote and slurping young pulque!

Well, that was an email address I once had because my customers said I could fix their 'sick' drip irrigation systems. I didn't think of it as a V.D. thing, so to avoid confusion as to my profession, I dropped the drip (drdrip) email! LOL:rolleyes:

Oh how I love our copy of that book and how I love that quote.

Many times on this forum I think the idea, beauty and excitement of self-discovery is squashed and lost when way too many details are shared.
