Fireworks alert

Hey, we all love fireworks, and we love Baja even more for making those wonderful aerial bomb rockets available so cheap.

Recently we made our annual "load up the arsenal" purchase in Ensenada (right across the side street from Sonora Leather Shop)

Sort of casual mention was made that these were now being made in Mexico, not China as previously

Long story short- out of a dozen rockets we had our first dud- complete "no fire", several issues with others and the wicks,
and then a colossal "major malfunction" as NASA might say.

We had one blow up, on the launch pad, right in the face of the guy that was trying to get ignition with a regular cigaret lighter.

Not sure if this is endemic to the new breed, but use extreme caution when lighting up the "big boys"
Our guy was a mess for a while after- blackened hands, ringing ears, sort of all around shell shock.

(Note to elgatoloco- yep, these are the same rockets we launched at your camp in La Gringa a few years back- just in case you had forgotten that sneak attack:lol::lol::lol:)

Are you suggesting we should grow up??

My Mom had a great saying, "We must keep on doing these things because some day we will get old and cannot do them anymore!"

(Mom was 90 when she said this)

thebajarunner, Doesn't take much youth and agility to light the fuse of a firecracker. Grow up? Yep! Nope! Just have other things I'd rather spend my money on besides firecrackers.

2 years ago i bought some fireworks outside of San Felipe. They almost took my hand off. The rockets had 12 inch fuses. When you lit them it immediately blew up. No time delay. The worst and unsafest fireworks that I have used in my entire life. The store owner was proud to say that they were made in Mexico. :)

Yeah, told us the same thing.
The previous ones made in China were much more reliable....

and, to Cypress, I just hope I never get too old for this kind of stuff
maybe when I do I can join you old folks on the rocker chairs....
following your lead I obviously would never buy more beer,
look where it ends up after we process it....:yes::yes:

thebajarunner, So you define youthful as getting into shooting firecrackers? I must have grown old at about 16, about the same time I switched from firecrackers to beer.:D

Too old for this kinda stuff? Back in the day, surfing
San Miguel Ensenada we would actually throw
M80's at other surfers tents, but I was 18,
bajarunner I'm quite sure you wouldn't want to
go thru the rest of your life, or someone you love
minus some didgets
or an eye. It's not labeled as getting old, just a certain amount
of LOGIC and maturity most of us find as appropriate

The real stuff

I spent 50 years designing and testing the real stuff: military ordnance devices and systems. Starting with the most sensitive, and by design, the most reliable part of the explosive train (detonators, initiatiators(including those used for automotive air bags) and equine all the way up to the main charge explosive/warhead. I'm happy to say that I still have all my fingers and hearing because of safety procedures/equipment. I never allowed my children to have fireworks but instead took them to professional shows where the experts did loading, handling and firing. Today they do the same with my grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Seems like everything is bad for you anymore and a number of us probably grew up firing off fireworks. So, how careful you are helps and how old you are for certain types of fireworks means a lot, as some of us can't run as fast or throw as fast.

Younger ones should be using sparklers that are safe and bought in the USA. The older ones I would really be watching how they are lighting the fireworks but would encourage them to do it safely. Fireworks on the beach in Mexico is a tradition most of us have done with our families for years, just as my parents did with us in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and once upon a time in California.

Watching the fun is never as good as participating at some level, however safely using them is the good start. Do or don't allow as your heart leads you but fireworks are made for the 4th of July. It is what it is and everyday something can get you or something bad can happen to you. Just try to be as prepared as possbile and then enjoy life as you want, not fearing it but living it!

The Bajarunner - I wish they would outlaw the damn things in Mexico. How old are you dude?! The only people I see shooting off the things are gringos - vendejos! Especially hate the ones that rattle the windows. Keep em up in Oakdale man (if they allow them - most likely not).

Is that relevant??
If I were 18 is that too young?
Is 80 too old?
Well, somewhere in between, although as I have often posted I was on the podium for top drivers at the 1972 1000.

As to rattling your windows, sorry, we did not see your house at La Gringa, which is the only place we have fired them.

We did launch an attack on elgatoloco some years back, he is still planning revenge.

And, yep, would be great to bring a batch home to Oakdale, the stuff going off out here last night was at least equal to "Baja's Best"

Sorry you are too old to remember having fun like this.....
